Take a look at my ECU

Pulled my ECU out to diagnose if it had any damage that could be causing some of the drivability issues my VR4 has had lately. I don't immediately see anything other than those weird streaks on the chipboard, any thoughts?

It appears to be a rebuilt 1g ECU, the number doesn't match the ones that came in the VR4. Also, non eprom, bummer.

Shows to be a 90-92 1g FWD Turbo, Federal emission MT. Link from another thread here: click

You can "convert" it to AWD ( and change the emission setting too ) via resistors combos R129 and R130 as listed in the link.

For EEPROM you can send it to ECMLink for a piggyback conversion, not much more than installing a socket on E models.

All Galant VR4s came from the factory with EPROM ECUs. Yours not being EPROM is an obvious indicator that it's not the original computer. I've heard many say the FWD and AWD ECUs have slight differences in the timing and fuel maps, as well as the FWD ECU lacking a speed limiter. That being said, you should be able to run a FWD ECU without issue. Unless there's an issue with the ECU itself, it should be fine.

The picture you posted isn't high-res enough to really tell anything. How do the drivers look? How does the board under the capacitors look? Does it smell like rotten eggs at all? How does the back side of the board look?

Thanks for the info, I know that the guy who had the car before me replaced the ECU, I don't know if the original was bad but the car wasn't running. I know MPI fuse was replaced and the ECU and possibly fuel pump. I don't have the original ECU.

Here are some additional photos in the next post.

The board looks fine to me by the pictures you posted. That spider web looking sh*t isn't anything to worry about IMO. I highly doubt that would affect operation in any way.

I'm sure the drivability issues you're experiencing are frustrating. It suck not being able to pin down a problem like that. At a glance, I'd say the ECU might not be to blame. Did you check out the TPS operation as suggested in your other thread?

I just sent the throttle body off to be rebuilt by the throttlebodys.com guy. It needs new shaft seals anyway, so might as well have him check out and set the sensors on it correctly while he's at it. click

if it needs a new TPS or ISC he can replace them while it's there.

according to my computersmart friend this ECU got wet at some point in its life, it is a non eprom ecu so I am going to be on the lookout for a good condition eprom ecu now.

I found a replacement. Going to throw that in along with my throttle body when it gets back from being rebuilt. Hopefully car will be nice after that. I know TB shaft seals were shot.
