I don't see how a 2.3 would have the timing marks off, unless you had the head or block decked somewhat, since the height is consistent. On a 2.4 you have issues because of the added deck height, different belt, gears, etc.

I don't know how it could possibly be off but have you checked that #1 is TDC when all your marks are lined up with timing belt tensioned?

Update: Due to my noobness, I installed the crank plate backwards /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif
The car now runs and I am very thankfull that its not something catastrophic.
