I'll take it upon myself to contact MedalCraft and see if they still have the old molds around. Hard to say if they would make them for just anyone, though. If nothing else, it would be interesting to see what they have to say.

I'd be in for 1 or 2 depending on the price.

In for 1, or probably 2.

Could we perhaps get a bunch made up which just say "1 of heaps" for the jdm boys?

It's definitely possible to get the key fobs made without any engraving on them.

If anyone else here would prefer to get just a blank one then let me know and I'll find out from the company what the price difference would be.

I got an initial quote back from the company but the quote was for cast zinc which I don't think is a good match for the original color. I sent them additional pictures and asked them to revise their quote.

The quote was also based on them doing one large group buy and sending them to one individual. I'd rather not be responsible for hounding people for money, tracking everyone's money and shipping everything out but I will if that's what needs to be done.

I asked them to supply a price if everyone orders them individually directly from them to determine the price difference.

I'll send another update once I get the revised quote!

I'm newly registered, and I don't own a VR4, but I have a 'connection' to all of the 1991 vehicles.

Has anyone tried contacting "Medalcraft" in Green Bay, WI to see if they have any spares/originals/molds? They are the ones who were originally contracted to provide the dash plaques & keyfobs to Mitsubishi.

Medalcraft subbed out the engraving to a company called "Green Bay Trophies", just a few miles away. I was employed there, and myself & a co-worker engraved every single one of the dash plaques & keyfobs for the 1991 year run. This was a long time ago, so I'm not entirely sure on the details, but I believe it was a Triple Line Roman font, don't remember what font size, but that would be pretty easy to measure from the originals. These were all cast medallions, what their composition was, I don't remember, however.

I don't have a lot more info other than this, but I can try to answer whatever questions I can...

Wow, that's great info. Thanks for the heads up, Ray!

Welcome to the board Ray!

I still haven't received the updated quote to have them produced in a different metal but the old quote had them for $21.81 each not including shipping.

I am talking to the administrators of the site right now to see if they would be interested in handling the bulk purchase and sale of these.

I contacted MedalCraft just now since we hadn't heard back from Curt. I talked to a lady there who said based on pictures that it did look like something they produced but that she would need to do some digging to see if they still had the original dies.

She will contact me with any news.

UPDATE!

I just received a reply from the company and they can produce them in the gold color for no extra charge PLUS they are willing to sell them individually with no minimum order!

So all we need to do now is get them a key fob and pay the one time $80 design fee to have the mold created.

The final price once ordered will be $20.35 plus $15 S/H so $35.35 if ordered directly from them individually.

There would be cost savings if a bulk order is placed and I'll talk to the administrators here about that option.

If everyone who has posted here that they are interested chips in $3 then that would cover the design costs and turbowop's key fob!

Does this seem reasonable to everyone?

I'm glad you got through to somebody. I had simply emailed somebody at the company - was going to email somebody else today since I hadn't heard back anything as of yet.

I personally would like to wait until MetalCraft gets back to you before making the decision to go with this other company. That, and $15 shipping per keychain seems insane. Metalcraft's pricing on 100 keychains was under $10 too.

It's looking more right now that there would be one large order shipped to one person and sent out from there which would only have one $15 shipping charge.

We'll see what MetalCraft says but it would be a shame to put the brakes on this for a week or two while they look for dies made 20 years ago.

If it's going to save everyone $10 per, I'd maybe be willing to handle some of those shipping charges by shipping them individually out. It can't cost more than like $3 to ship a key chain...

We'd probably get a lot more interest if they are closer to $25 per as well.

But, I'd also like to wait to hear what Medalcraft has to say. These cars are honestly REALLY old, do you really care if it takes a few weeks to find more info on getting an original keyfob made? I sure don't.

If everyone wants to wait to hear back from Medalcraft before moving forward that is fine with me.

As far as the price, I thought that the price for the key fob was ridiculously cheap and the price for the shipping was ridiculously high. Overall though I don't think $35 shipped is unreasonable. The last replicas that looked nothing like the originals sold for $40 plus shipping for aluminum and $50 plus shipping for brass. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

It's sounding like one of the administrators is going to do a bulk order for the community though which would knock the prices down significantly. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd be willing to pitch in $3 for creating the mold. I'd also be willing to pay a few bucks for the price of an extra fob for whoever offers up theirs for creating the mold.
