So the captive nut snapped when trying to remove this bolt.

Anyone have an elegant solution. Hopefully not cutting through the floor...

I'm guessing it should say "nut"?

If so, that can be a nightmare. I had this happen on the front crossmember bolt mounting nuts for the control arms on a Lancer. Had to cut into the arms to reweld the nuts.

Why couldn't they just leave a spot for a wrench?

Because Mitsubishi loves us.

If the bolt snapped off completely
I would try cleaning all the paint in the area off, drill completely through the center of it with a small bit, spray pb blaster in there and get everything nice and soaked, let it sit for for like an hour, put in an extraction bit and then hit it with a torch around the broken bolt for a little bit to expand the nut from the bolt and it should come out.

They make rivet nuts (aka rivnuts) that can be used to replace weld nuts. Sort of like threaded inserts and can be installed blind like a rivet.

I'm pretty sure this is m10 bolt. Good idea though!
