rain gutter guards re-installation

So I received my vr4 with a nice little roof rack which I have taken off recently to try and get better gas mileage. I'm stuck with putting the old gutter guards back in, the previous owner left them in the trunk for me however when I try to re-attach them the clips don't seem to hold it in, am I doing something wrong here?

This should be an easy task and I know I'm going to feel dumb when I figure it out.

 

Well if its not too late. You could try your local auto glass guys. They usually have tools and a resource to new clips for those types of trim.
