Custom skid plate

I don't like having everything open to the elements. My plan is to run a piece of aluminum from the bumper cover here:

to the other side.

Cut off these:

and bolt the piece of aluminum to the underside of the bumper cover.

Mount to these bolts as well:

That's the, well I dunno what it's called, engine cradle?

I may also mount to these:

that's the passenger side btw, what are those used for?

Yeah i wanted to do the same. You could drill holes in the aluminuim sheet for the oil drain bolt and perhaps a bigger hole for the oil filter, install a rubber bushing to fill the hole. This way you could take that rubber cover out to drain the oil and take the oil filter out without opening up the whole aluminium cover.

I wish you guys had posted up earlier when my car was on the lift. I could have shown you the left and right under body panels, rear fuel tank guard and the skidplate with mounting bar and modified cross members stolen from a rally car.

The skid plates are VERY VERY heavy and so thick I seriously think they might be bullet proof for any medium caliber handgun. For drag queens (excuse the pun) they clearly wouldn't be acceptable but for a street car with a lot of money invested in engine and transmission mods, I'll live with the weight, especially as the JDM cars are already about 70lbs lighter due to our lack of steel bumpers.

There are a few pics here of the mounting bar, side plates and fuel tank guard

My soft-roader skidplate is the floor of a discarded plastic pickup truck bedliner. The front edge is attached to a length of metal electrical conduit running the width of the panel which is run through the front tow eyes and there are two rear-pointing sections of smaller diameter conduit sticking out the back which slip into sections of larger conduit installed to the underbody.

Ultimately, I'll be running a 4-piece, metal setup: 1 covering lower radiator support to firewall, 2 covering fuel lines and such down each side between the wheel wells, and 2 protecting the gas tank.

Nice to see projects like this.

here is more food for thought, past gvr4.org threads involving skid plates (one with dimensions)

Good luck!
