Had another amazing shootout experience! But first for some problems:

- Discovered that one of the rear shocks is blown. Too late to do anything about it at the shootout… That that made my already soft rear end even softer. Not very good for autoxing.
- Someone noticed a previously crack on my intake coming back. Fortunately, Brian and Brett were able to fix it! Thanks guys!
- I kept suffering from dropping fuel pressure. Before leaving for the shootout, I replaced the fuel filter and installed fuel pressure gauge that can be logged with DSM Link. At Ecolodge, I rewired the fuel pump. But it still had problems . I then bought and installed another 255HP pump from Buschur, still the same problem… At 25psi of boost, fuel pressure drops from 67psi to 61psi, between 5k-8k RPM. I am beginning to think that van fuel supply lines might be smaller than DSM line. Time to take some measurements.

Van understeered worse than usual at the Autox course, it kept getting faster, but not fast enough to get into the trophies (I was in 4th place overall).

At the drag strip, I first ran a couple of 12.0’s @ 116mph (best trap speed for the van). But then, I pulled off 11.80@115 (major knock, that slowed me down on the top end)

On my next pass, I thought I popped off my intercooler pipe off, but turns it my turbo SIEZED so suddenly, it felt like a blown I/C pipe. My racing was over for the day and I drove it home (all 700 miles) in NT mode! FYI: mileage to Ohio with boost, was consistent 22mpg, mileage back to Boston, without boost was 26.7mpg. Same car, same weight, same tune, same speed

omertaitalia, are you still working on your swap?

Nice thread!

I have also two 4x4 spacewagons here! Nice DD in winter times, those have viscous rear lsd.

Those are soch 2.0. Going to swap 2.4 motor and ac from expo to other one.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I finally had a drama free shootout with the Galant though. I didn't realize you were having issues. I saw the pass with the 11.8 and assumed you were doing fine!

Leon, nice to meet you at the shootout. Keep that wagon going...it's awesome! Glad to hear you made it home w/o the turbo. Interesting the mileage increases :)

Thanks guys!

I now have to address the following problems:

- turbo (will send if to FP)
- fuel pressure drop
- blown rear EVO8 KYB shock (already have 2G Koni on order)
- reinforce the rear muschage, the pumpkin is looking a bit twisted...

I saw you pass by our 11 deep line up of GVR4's but you never stopped to say hi so I didn't get a chance to meet you. I did take pretty good shots of you on my FB page though.

I walked by the Galant row on Saturday and took some photos. That was very cool!

Most of the times I drove past the row later, I was headed to make a pass, so I couldn't chat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have been warned about Summit rear end mustache bar, well they were right:

I now need to find new one. Does anyone have a lead on a Summit at a junk yard.

I also need to replace the bushings. I wonder if the 1g bushing will work here?

Leon,

Years ago Curtis made a rear moustache bar for a VR4 by welding two stock bars together and using one set of bushings. He also stitched the two bars together by welding bracing material in the edges so that both bars were tied together at numerous points. I appreciate it might be hard to find two bars but it might be worth doing having seen that picture. In fact maybe you could beat that twisted bar until it was almost straight and use it to brace the new bar?

Paul,

I am thinking about re-enforcing the factory bar, but I would rather not (nearly) double its weight, as Curtis did. I think that adding an "I-beam" section on the top and possibly on the bottom should do the trick.

Plus, the van has SUPER SOFT end bushings! That was one of the major contributing factors to the failure! I definitely need to upgrade them! Does anyone know who carried urethane bushings for the 1G bar? I am hopoing they are close enough to work on the van...

Congrats on another successful shootout! Hey you drove there, had fun, and drove home. I'd call that a success.

Interesting find regarding the gas mileage. Sounds like you need to throw on an EcoBoost emblem!

I am having a terrible time a replacement bar! As much as hate to do it, I just might have to try to straighten the old one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Have you tried www.car-part.com ? Not sure what the part would be listed as but you can try searching for an entire rear suspension and call some of the places that show up.

Drew, as I later found out, DSM bushings would not fit Summit bar . So instead, I window welded them. Not as good new bushings, but better than before.

As for the bar, my friend Doug E. and I welded on some re-enforcements:

Weight went from 9lbs to 12bls, much lighter than a “double bar” .

I had another fun day at the oval track! This time I tried higher tire pressure in the rear, to counter the untersteer. That helped, I wish I would have done it sooner!

In the last race, the Camaro had me stage way up in the marbles… that really messed up my launch. I should have forced him to stage lower. Oh well, I was happy with the 3rd place! First time that was done in a minivan .
