Shep, TRE, or Jack's? Seems like they all know what they are doing! I know it's been ask before and I'm sure it will be ask again.....

when the time comes, i plan on using Jack's for a full cluster rebuild. i like the idea that he will rebuild the gear clusters, and i can assemble my transmission the way i would like to. its easy for me to swap clusters, forks, rails, etc, but i don't have the special tools for bearings, or a press. the guy seems awesome, he posts up a lot of good information for us doing transmission work on our own, and a lot of good driveline advice in general. one of my good friends just got a basic rebuild from Jack's and he absolutely loves the way the car shifts.

we also have a local here in CT who does awesome transmission rebuilds. i don't know if its against the rules to advertise for someone who isn't a supporting vendor, so if you would like more information, please PM me, and i could put you in contact with him.

we don't really have supporting vendors.

Jacks, Shep, TRE all have halo effect - not that they don't build a good transmission but their shop name doesn't rebuild your trans, an employee does - so it's as good as he is. Last TRE I had for example, wasn't very impressive and failed early in life (not saying it's their fault, just saying they're not bulletproof)

Way I see it, shipping a trans sucks - if you have a local builder with good reputation they're probably about as good as the big 3.

Thanks for the replies....I ended up purchasing a used recently rebuilt TRE locally for $700 with the transfer case. Hope I didn't get hurt to bad. I installed it last night and need to go get some fluid today and see if I did ok or not. It's a stage 2 and I figured the price I paid was less than half what I would have in a rebuilt one with hopefully all the better stuff in it. If I need to freshen it up down the road it should be cheaper!

I have dealt with Shep several times since I live in Ohio. I have even sold a few DSMs to his shop manager, he's a real cool guy as well. I can't say he is better than any of the others, but you can't go wrong with his reputation and service. I know the OP bought a used transmission, but I figured I'd add my 2 cents since I was already here.

Only Shep doesn't personally build every trans. I got a bum build from him (or his brand name). Cost me an extra $350 plus round trip shipping to fix, again.

I went with TRE but afaict it boils down to customer service, some of which has been known to be spotty.

That being said, I've seen several posts about transmissions lately and am beginning to wonder if my transmissions FS post is invisible.
