Shims and Preloads.

I know zero about these. I understand they need to be set correctly when rebuilding transmission parts. Is this JUST on the clusters themselves or are there shims and preloading involved when reinstalling the clusters into the case.

I'm trying to work out if it is worth trying to save some money by having some clusters built and sent one way rather than having an entire transmission rebuilt.

Paul.

The shims go under the outer bearing races in the cases. Replace the shims with solder, and put everything together. Then take everything apart, and measure the solder. Measure the thickness of the solder to find what shims you need for the desired preload/endplay.
