So how long does that mean you'll have an exhaust that's only 6" long? I think yer f***ing crazy. Why do you have to wait for a different turbo setup to fab the exhaust anyway? The only thing that will change will be the first part of the downpipe. I'm sure that would be a pretty easy modification for whoever is fabbing up the rest of your setup.

yes thats exactly what that means. yeah call me crazy i guess. reason i want to wait is 2 reasons: next setup with be a way different downpipe which would require to be modified if i tried to use this one (unecessary money). other reason is money, it would cost a few hundred to fab up a nice Vband stainless downpipe including the labor. So this works for now. after i get back from the shootout, i'll start saving up for said parts like the JMFab GVR4 specific Top Mount, Wastegates, dump tubes, Vband Downpipe, 2150's and of course the REAL turbo which hits the total at $2,400 all by itself. So yeah, I'll have some work to do next year.

I can't even imagine how loud that is..have u been pulled over yet ?

It can be pretty loud, but it all depends on your driving, for instance if you dont wind it up and short shift its not that loud. there's still other things out there that are very much louder like Harley's, Stupid Honduuhh's, Bikes, and of course the occasional V8. I drive this car to work between 2 jobs everyday and No i have not been pulled over yet.

I agree that this is not the best idea for a cross country road trip, but I'm sure it's not as loud as most would think at idle and light throttle.
I drove on an open o2 housing for a couple weeks one time while waiting on parts and it wasn't loud at all unless I wanted it to be.

That said, driving a few miles to and from work is one thing... driving across many different states and counties is another. The droning of the exhaust on the highway would drive me crazy, lol.
Hopefully the cops aren't too strict anywhere from TX to OH. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well I love the way it sounds, it drives me crazy in a good way. Plus having it this loud with no cruise control, or a/c really helps to keep you awake for long distance 22+ hour road trips. The more quieter and smooth things are, the more chance your going to doze off. I just really can't wait to get it tuned though, that way I can start playing with it and see what she can do.

The noise would be the least of my worries with a short downpipe like this. My biggest concern is all the heat that’s generated from the exhaust being dumped where you have it now . During a long trip you will heat soak your oil filter and oil pan – not to mention everything else under there such as wiring. Sometimes there is un-burnt fuel in the exhaust as well – I think that’s an unsafe spot. Why take the time to wrap the downpipe if the heat generated by the exhaust supersedes the heat on the pipe ? I would at least add an extension to that pipe and have it dump past the engine bay area.

You have a nice car – would hate to see something bad happen to it!

Thats not really accurate. Sleep deprivation is sleep deprivation. No loss of creature comforts or loud exhaust will keep you from dozing off. If anything it will make you more exhausted during a long trip. Keep trying to justify your poor choices in the name of safety though. It keeps the thread entertaining. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

you should really make the downpipe go past the subframe, then once you do that you can add a 3 inch vband on the end and then make your full exhaust with the same 3 inch vband and when it comes time to upgrade, next year like your saying, you already have an exhaust. you'll just have to have a new downpipe made for the new set-up. this way you aren't driving around with an exhaust thats just pushing heat right into your oil pan, oil filter, any wires that my be near and possibly catch those wires on fire or anything else near by. it will also allow you to sell that turbo with a downpipe that someone might actually want to use and you might be able to get more money for it.

edit:
or if you really want to safe money, buy this click and use your old exhaust.

driving around on that locally, using it for short trips probably isn't bad, but on a long trip with constant pressure coming out the exhaust, i dont know what will happen, i could imagine it being pretty bad if something was to go wrong due to the excess heat being released in that area. maybe add an oil temperature gauge

Oh shut up mark, like you know everything there is about taking long road trips and things to keep you awake minus comforts that make it easy to fall asleep like cruise control, and a/c. I don't give a sh*t about your stupid ass opinions on whether or not my experience on the subject of taking long road trips are "really accurate" to you, so STFU and GTFO.

Hmm Wop has a way of saying things but he is correct and I bet even JNR would agree with him. You have a nice car but you're not doing it any justice when you make some of these decisions. Listen to your peers and look past how they give you advice. Everything that's been suggested is good for Samara.

Agreed. I doubt you would have any problems with the dump in that spot on shorter trips, but all that heat, dumped there, for a long period of time might not turn out so well.

Even in person I'm blunt and tell it like it is. But it usually comes across good natured and softer. That's hard to convey on an Internet forum, I guess. That said, a lot of what I say here isn't just opinion, it's fact. Justifying a 6" exhaust on a street car by saying it keeps you awake? Give me a f***ing break.

Maybe I wouldn't post in Mike's thread so much but I can't help it. Mike buys five quarts of oil and puts a picture of those bottles on 20 Internet forums and two different gvr4 Facebook groups as well as on his wall. It's hard to ignore...

Mike there are a lot of people who didn't agree with me cleaning up your thread. I've already pointed out the fact that you react inappropriately to what is damn good advice given in good faith. I gave you the benefit of the doubt after you mouthed off to some well respected members on the whole Bullfab bars issue and your response to this is to jump straight back in and start mouthing off again before I've even finished replying to everyone who thinks I let you off too easy the first time.

I would appreciate it, if "you" would STFU or your entire thread is in jeopardy of being pulled. It's fast becoming the most controversial thread on the board and we have better things to do than police it when you clearly have no intention of listening to the comments people make and choose to use it as your own personal forum for disrespecting members. Since you appear to have the build thread up on half a dozen other sites I am sure you can continue the drama elsewhere. Please do so.

I once had an external dump o2 blowing heat in that same location. For months, it was fine. Then I took a 600 mile trip. The wiring harness melted and wires shorted together. Suddenly the key stopped functioning. Turn off the car, it keeps running, and all the lights stay on. Long story short, I ended up dicking around trying to fix it for a little while at a gas station late at night outside of Atlanta. Apparently I attracted some negative attention. I stayed at a hotel a mile or so down the road. Had to disconnect the battery (and hence the alarm) to get the car to turn off. Came out the next morning to see my car with a window busted out and a bunch of stuff stolen out of it - VPC, AFC, AFPR, intake, yadda yadda. It was undrivable. Had to have it towed back home.

Fix your sh*t and quit being an asshole. Nobody is being a jerk to you, just offering friendly suggestions based on actual understanding of cars and how heat works. Perhaps you should stop posting pictures of your oil (seriously, who cares) and listen to others.

I love your car, but these guys are right, you should extend the exhaust at least past the oil filter. I would say have it dump right past the oil pan. Also, that braided nylon oil drain? That sh*t will melt like ice cream in Texas in July. Trust me, braided nylon is NOT GOOD for high temp areas...

Mike, I sent you a text about this but I'll explain my experience too.

I did this once on a 20g set up I had, probably 10 years ago, at the time I made the downpipe like that, external gate, dump tube and the down pipe were the same length, it sounded nasty as hell, I liked it. I intended to quiet things down a bit, but had not gotten around to it. it was fine to get me to and from work, but then I went on a road trip.

An hour on the highway was all it took for the heat from the exit of the pipe to start heating my oil pan, started burning the paint off it, I pulled off due to the smell and quickly realized what was happening, Who knows how hot the oil in that car got (you could risk destroying your fancy new engine you've been trying to protect with 100 oil changes) or what damage would have occurred if I continued, but I found a local auto parts store, grabbed a foot of that cheap flexy exhaust repair sh*t

and a turndown

Both are readily available from your work...

I clamped them in place and wire tied them to the sub frame with safety wire, headed back out on the road and had no issues the rest of the way...

So you can spend the $25 before the trip, be prepared, still have it loud as sh*t and if you're worried it looks bad, take it off when you get to ohio. But jesus man, dont burn your car to the f***ing ground.

As for your road trip statements, I've driven a gvr4 1200 miles in a sitting and the droning won't help you stay awake, it will lull you to sleep. Rumble strips are about the only thing that saved my ass on the return trip (was at 2200 miles on 7 hours of sleep in 4 days).

Not to mention that I can tell you as fact, one of the things you learn when you ride, is that sound (especially droning sounds like exhaust & wind noise) exhaust you more quickly than you would otherwise. That's why most people wear earplugs on bikes (or they should). Numerous studies show that high volumes for long periods cause mental exhaustion and lead to distraction and poor decisions. That's part of why OSHA limits how many dB you can be exposed to during a work shift.

Aside from all that, dumping all the exhaust heat on the oil pan, filter & wiring harness? Not a good plan. At least ghetto fab something that'll dump it in the middle of the car. one bend and a piece of straight tubing will help a ton, and be pretty damn cheap. While fabbing an exhaust now seems counterproductive, you're talking about having to replace the o2/downpipe at most when you change setups- which you have to build anyway. Building the rest of the exhaust isn't a lost cost because it'll be re-usable, even if you have to cut it around the steering rack and re-flange.
