My block has been at the machine shop for over a week, so I'm getting bored and starting to paint stuff.

I even metal patched that nasty rust hole in the front of my hood, and fixed the last of the peely clearcoat.

These piston tops were clean 9000 miles ago.

I used the engine-tech brand from Rockauto for my 4G64 colt. They were super cheap, something like $65 shipped for main/rod bearings and the rings. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the rings were made in Japan and the bearings in Israel when I received them. So much so that I ordered the same set-up for the 2.4 that's going in my 94 Summit coupe.

Rings gapped, bearings gauged...
Minimum PTW clearance, maximum top ring gap, medium second ring gap, medium oil ring gap, maximum oil gaps, crankwalk .002"

Balance shafts are in (didn't have to hammer them in much), oil pump is installed, rear main is smushed into the housing...
Then of course this had to happen. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

Ps. Yes that oil pan gasket is going in the trash.

Correct application on the box?
Looks like one gasket is the wrong size?
Water pump gaskets look like 4g63 and 4g61 variations, plus something else mixed in.

Block sure looks pretty. Color match to the Belize green panel paint?

Yeah it was just missing a piece. Fortunately I was able to find a rear main set for $15 this morning.

That gave me a good stopping point before it got rediculously late, and now I'm back on track.

You certainly may ask good sir, as a matter of fact I'm glad you did ask. That poor old cover started life on the uber rare 89 Summit LX model with the 4g61 and a five speed. But you couldn't possibly have seen my modifications in the grainy photo. Perhaps you were referring to how my A/C belt went all slasher on my cover?

Getting closer...

It's been seventy five miles since I drove it home Tuesday night. So far so good.

520 miles in on this fresh build, and not a drop of oil missing. Looks like the correct answer was rings. Thread resolved!
