Those in charge of sacking those who claim it's ok to call a VR4 a DSM have been sacked. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Rode hard and put away wet a few times has she? at least she will be on the road still with a little more appreciative owner!

Well we got the crack in the vc welded up and I finished powdercoating it today. I think it turned out pretty well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I also pulled the ISC and tested it. VFAQ says I should see 25-30 ohms across each pin, but I was getting a consistant 38ohms accross each. Now if they all gave different readings I would assume it's bad, but the fack that the readings were so consistant makes me wonder if this is really my problem...Any thoughts?

That's my next step. I was also planning on cleaning out the MAF a little to see if that helps the problem. The owner before me did a vac reduction which I know is a fairly common thing to do, but there's a possibility he might have done something wrong. I know there's a page on VFAQ that tells how to do a vac reduction, but I can't find it for the life of me!

^Thank you very much good sir!

I also did a little reading Here and found guys talking about blocking off their FIAV to clean up their idle. I'm a little nervous to do so considering I live in the arctic tundra also known as Fargo North Dakota. Has anybody had any experience blocking off their FIAV?

I'll probably just start with a boost leak test and go from there for now.

I have done the emissions delete and egr blockoff on my galant and it worked fine. I do have a bypass for the FIAV I just have not installed it yet. I was planning too but am more worried about getting the trans fixed. lol.

congrads on the new purchase! click I had a similiar discussion, the black ones should be close to 40 ohm because they are newer..the original ones ohm out to around 30 ohms..if you read the thread someone sent me an amazing link that will explain all.

^Awesome man, thanks for letting me know! I can't believe the amount of information that there is for that one tiny little sensor! I had a hard time believing it could be bad with such a consistent reading. Now I've just got a couple more sensors, a maf cleaning, and a boost leak test to go before I block off my fiav.

...I'm starting to kinda like this forum /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif haha

ps. for future reference: this is the link to the page about the ISC/IAC

I tried to do a boost leak test tonight and failed miserably. I forgot that my boost leak tester is a 2''-3'' coupler that I used on my old 50trim. I tried to rig something up so I could at least shoot a little air through the system and I found zero leaks which can't be right considering it's still all stock piping. So I guess I'll have to get a different coupler and try it again some other time.

On another note, I found out that my "16g" is really a 14b /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif The kid who sold me the car obviously didn't know what he was talking about, and I was dumb for not looking into it closer. eh oh well, not the end of the world. The good news is that the 14b has zero shaft play and it's in great shape at least.

Sometime when I've got more time, I'll machine a fiav blockoff plate and see if that calms down the idle a little bit. The idle surge kinda comes and goes, so idk what to really think about that.

My final concern about this car is that it'll grind if I try to shift into 3rd gear whenever the rpms are over 2500. The kid who sold the car said there were a couple bearings or something that needed to be replaced on the front of the transmission. He explained it to me a little and it sounded like no big deal, well I'm starting to think it's a bigger deal than he made it sound. Any thoughts/comments about what could be causing the slight grind? Maybe I'll upload a video sometime.

^hahaha ok this is blowing my mind...

two reasons

1. i'm a a newb to the vr4 world, even the dsm one. I had idle issues, some surging, just performed a boost leak test too to fix them (found it leaking off the turbo/j pipe) and also huge issues until i also just machined out a FIAV plate myself. The combo has her idling like a dream. note that when I got rid of all the leaks, I had to re adjust the IPS, TPS, BISS, and timing to get it to idle perfectly, the leaks did not fix it alone.

2. I bought the vr4 being told it was a 16g...doing the boost leak found out what i thought was a 16g is actually a 14b

so your not alone in this boat. I feel as though the whole boost leak/idle problem is a right of passage to own a vr4 at this point....everyone knows how to fix it and i know why now..it happens to EVERYONE

well good luck!

Lol well at least I'm not alone haha! I think I might change the trans fluid and see if the slight grind into 3rd gear goes away. If not then I might actually consider just selling it back to the kid who sold it to me since he's been asking for it back haha. I really don't want to be replacing/rebuilding the tranny in a year :/

ps. 825 view but only 33 comments? haha you guys aren't very talkative /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I know I'm only checking in to see photos of how slutty this Paula gets /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've been doing some searching, and I found a 1990 na galant in a junkyard near where I live. I'm planning on cutting off the radiator support and welding it in place of mine. The guy at the yard said the radiator supports are different, but I'm thinking/hoping that they are the same minus the intercooler bracket for the vr4. Can anybody confirm this?

Also, I'm not really sure about the fuel door. Mine has a hole in it for what looks to be some sort of key spot or something? Anybody know if all galants have this key hole or should I just replace the whole door?

Your missing the lock core for the gas tank. yeah, its for the keys.

Ok that's good to know I guess. Weird that somebody would take that...Anyways, do all galants have a key hole like that? Or is there some other fuel door I could replace this one with from a different car? I thought I heard somewhere that dsm fuel doors would work...
