is there a "how to" on rebuilding and shimming a 4 bolt rear diff? does it require any special tools or can it be done with basic hand tools?

I think the consensus is that it's quite simple. You pull off the input flange and the rear cover. Then the differential slides out the back. Rebuilding comes down to replacing the bearings (for which part numbers can be found in the how-to section) and adjusting the shims (part numbers also in how-to section) which sit on either side (think axles) of the differential.
