Checking endplay on your cam? Simply put the cam in the motor with whatever thrust control shims etc you are using (don't know if this motor uses anything like that) Then put the dial indicator on the end of the cam with some preload. (I assume you have a weighted/magnetic base to hold the thing.) Zero the indicator, then gently move the cam away from you, and read the indicator, then pull it towards you and read the indicator. Add the two readings together to get the total endplay.
The amount of force you put on the cam/crank/whatever varies from person to person. Some people ream on them with a prybar, and some people push them by hand. I believe something in the middle is the correct choice. Remember that you are checking for play, not how-many-parts-can-I-bend.
