I'd bet the finish on the wheels probably needs to be redone anyways, so I would just use a chemical stripper. Airplane remover will work, or there's some stuff called Jasco that works well and is typically available in your local hardware store.

Stip off the old finish and plastidip all in one swoop, and then give the wheels a fresh coat of paint. You can do the whole job for under $100 bucks.

i have like 80% of the face of one of the wheels pealed. wheel finish looks great. enkei sticker is a little faded. if the other 3 are even close to the same condition i will be very happy.

WD-40 works pretty good to remove thin dip.

You should use PB or something equivalent for rusty bolts but WD-40 has so many uses you should always have a can around.

ok so the WD40 works well, but still takes some work. only done 2 so far.

ok let me just say: im glad im only gonna have to do this once. what a pain in the ass its been. the rear suspension has just been fighting me. and thats with not even a single spec of rust.

thats the side that fought the most.

rear is all finished up... 3bolt out, 4WS shit out (annoying), 4lug out (bitch), 4bolt LSD swapped in, 5lug in, fresh brakes, coilovers in, un-ghettofied EVO8 Enkei's...

i tore into the front pretty good before giving up for the night. probably gonna bribe someone at work to swap bearings/hubs for me.... still need to pull the 4WS front rack. then put it all back together again...shit.

Reason it is a pain to take off is because it wasn't thick enough. It took me 3 min to remove plastidip from one evo wheel. Good to see progress being made! It looks like here in Oregon the weather will be nice for the week. Hope you will have similar weather to finish it up:)

yeah, worked out really nice. wasnt too hot, not too cool (ok little chilly starting off in the AM). sun wasnt too bad (not a fan of the sun). i did get a couple sprinkles of rain on Saturday afternoon, but i would have continued till i droned.

im so excited about the progress im making. i dont care i just spent like 3K...ok hurts to say actually. but tires are scary junk, i think they have shifted belts or something? and front PS rack is pissing fluid out the left boot, and now im under it taking it out it looks like the right is starting to leak also.

i drove the EVO these wheels came off of, so i know they track well. nice new firm suspension, little more stopping power, stronger rear axles and LSD... it will all be worth it!

Car looks real nice with the evo wheels, I am doing the 5 lug swap on my car next weekend so we will both be rocking the 8s.

How did you block the 4WS lines, at the rack?

the rack is leaking. i will be replacing it with a TEL rack. i got it from a 92 AWD manual car.... so im just pulling all the lines out. also not really fun. they snake everywhere, and wrap around the hole engine bay.

shit, forgot i need a power steering fluid tank.

lol, new phone doesnt like low light pics.

i did move some shit out back before it got completely dark though.

sprayed down the last 2 wheels to try to get this crap off. spent a good while on them getting them to the original finish....then didnt take any pics lol.

i hope fo have her all buttoned up saturday so i can go sunday and get an alignment (firestone lifetime?).... oh! i did have a buddy press out the old hubs/bearings and put the new ones in. seemed like it was a challenge for him as he has never done this style, good thing i didnt attempt it then LOL. but they are all setup now with fresh bearings, seals, and 5lugs

ok, front went ok. did get in a little fight with the steering rack coupler. and a HUGE fight with some wheel studs. threads must have been fubar'ed from when the hubs where pulled?? or just to begin with (couple have M's stamped in them). so i antisiezed them and ran some spare random lug nuts (look like steel honda hub cap style) down all them to make sure the threads where good and that they where fully seated in the hubs. ran to the junkyard (yup, it was closer) and snagged up a few and a power steering tank that i now need a cap for.

didnt take any pics of my working, i was too busy working. lol. maybe ill remember to take a couple pics tomorrow when i pull the wheel off one more time.

so i need to:
put shockproof in t-case
drain diff? fill with shockproof
need 1 axle cotter pin
2 tie rod cotter pins
gear oil pump
power steering cap
tighten axle nuts
bed in brakes
go get alignment

oh and thanks again to 'bobdole' for hooking me up with the BC coilovers and brakes! hope to get some brake lines and hood struts soon...

i spent a lot of money and time....and i dont care, car drives awesome all the issues i have had seem to be gone. got the car aligned. front has -1.8 camber rear was like -2.6. i have a little bit of bounce in the front suspension, think im going to give a couple clicks firmer into the coilovers, but other than that they are awesome. brakes feel good. car looks good if i dont say so myself, and others seem to dig it.

im happy right now

once that wears off i do have a big turbo to put on.

ok, so i drove her to work today (~50miles round trip, city/freeway/traffic) and she did great. stupid CEL was going crazy with some what i assume is false knock from my shit lifters. but other than that was doing ok.
buddy hit me back and said to swing by after work to do a quick flat rate tune on her. took one look at the MAFT, double checked it was plugged in and wondered off, came back with a ecmlink gm maf harness. he went threw all the settings and i was trying to keep up and understand what was going on. fired right off. went out and did some driving and was pretty spot on. did some roll ins to boost, quick adjusts. tried some pulls but the lifters are fubar. they just need replaced. did manage to get some pulls in.

so...
-gonna need to swap to speed density obviously
-lifters goes without saying?
-he suggested cams. said not needed (i have FP2's), but knows someone with some FP4s maybe. and will make way more power. so, yeah.
-SMIM and probably throttle body (wtb: magnus/jmf intake)
-CLUTCH! lol. yeah. did a nice pull in 2nd, into 3rd and jumped some rpm it seemed, then again towards top of 3rd on another pull. (wtb: twin disc and 2g accumulator)
-solid front motor mount. i dont like the movement the engine has.
-what else is my car missing? lol. seems like i have bought everything...

i dont care... still fuckin excited.

Your lifters may be shit, but doubt they are the source of your knock. The knock sensor is tuned to pick up the resonant frequency of detonation, which should greatly differ from valve train noise/vibrations. You're more likely to have a setting configured incorrectly in ECMlink causing your CEL to light up. If you post up a log, we could take a look for you.

I agree with swapping to SD, or even back to a stock type MAF. The GM MAFs are garbage IMO.

Choose cams based on your overall goals for the car. Do you want a track car, or do you want something that's tame enough to still drive on the street? FP4s probably aren't a great street cam, but would will provide better balls out performance with the right setup.

Same goes for the clutch. Twin discs are notorious for being a pain in the ass on something that gets driven on the street, so do your research and identify your goals before you buy.

he pulled like 4* of timing when tuning, still was there. he has tuned tons of 4g63 cars.

as for the plans with the car, cams/clutch/etc... i just want a badass street car. i of course want it all. i doubt i ever bring my car to the track (of any kind). i like to drive my GVR4, but it certainly isnt my only car.

my buddy Bryan seems to think that the FP4's will idle fine.

we touched on the clutch issue just a little, as i know where this conversation goes. i need to move up to a 2900 and/or a pucked clutch. which has harsh engagement, grabby, generally shitty in traffic. but also i have had 4/6 puck clutches in other cars (both my civic and integra currently) and i have put MANY miles on them. my last integra had 30k miles on an ACT 6puck on daily dutys (50miles a day, with traffic). i have been researching twin discs all day. plenty of people dailying them, lots saying race only. im sure i can live with the engagement, not sure i like the idea of a rattly clutch though.

so i have been thinking. if i want a clutch thats decent, ill have to buy a new 2600, and a smaller turbo (hta green). but even then im curious if the torque will come on quick and toast it?... really doesnt matter, i doubt i'll chose less power.
so im going to continue with putting the T67 on.

idk. maybe this is just one viscous snowball...

Noisy lifters have been the cause of false knock readings since I got into 4G63's 15 years ago, not sure when that changed.
