TB experts - shaft seal replacement rubber rings

I'm trying to get the rubber rings pressed back in and they are being very difficult. Which way goes inwards?

Vfaq states the "open" area goes inward. The ring is coated in rubber and if I force it I'm scared I will destroy the rubber. Actually I have already made a small tear in the rubber coating fighting to get it in. Yes I have it greased up.

See the pics...

Do I have the wrong size rings?

Well, your pic shows you are putting them in backwards. the "open" side goes into the TB.

But, they are stubborn.

I used the throttle shaft and 50w oil to get them started straight then a socket and a small hammer to tap them in the rest of the way. They go in TIGHT.

Thats which way I thought they went in, the recessed area facing inward but man are they tight. I'll try it your way.

Thanks for a quick reply.

Yup, you have that one in backwards. When pressure builds up in side the TB, you want them to expand and seal up more.

Excellent, thanks. I see how that works now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Ok so like I mentioned, when I went to install the new rings I accidentally tore the rubber on both of them. *fail*

So I ordered some new ones and the place I bought them from sent me a different kind of ring. These new ones I recieved are metal on the outside with rubber on the inside only.

Which would you guys recommend? The blue rings seem like they would be much better in terms of sealing the shaft to the TB. I just want a good seal with no leaks.

I used the ones pictured in the first post but don't recall them being hard to get it. You could stick them in the freezer, I would think they'd shrink a little making it easier to get them in.

The metal ones are the ones that came in the TB from the factory. Whenever I have rebuilt one I just used a pick to get the old O ring out of the metal cage and put a new one in then reinstall.
