my first question about #148

just got this car today.1991 gvr4 99 thousand miles no mods. car was originaly sold in tx then went to ga. Now resides in il. It is cold outside there is snow falling. Car was driven back to il from ga. The temp gauge does not go above the first mark and the heat doesn't seem hot hot.
It is definately warm heat .

I also have a 90 galant non vr4 and the guage is usually right on half and the heat will cook you in your seat.

any ideas or suggestion would be great.

1st thing, Welcome.

2nd thing, put a valid city/state in your location.

Now to answer your question, your thermostat is stuck open. Very simple to fix. Buy a new t-stat for $5 at the auto store, get a 99 cent gasket, a small tube of gasket sealer, 12mm socket with short extension and pull the two 12mm head bolts off of the cover.

Clean both mating surfaces really well and install new parts.

If I were you, I would also buy a new radiator cap for around $10.

Also, check the coolant freeze point. If it has been in GA for any length of time, it may not be safe for IL weather.

If it does not read safe to -30 degrees F, drain, flush, and refill with 50/50 mix.

By the way, the temp gauge should read dead middle, straight up.
