Just updated the leaderboard and realised how damn fast you guys are. You're only a sneeze away from taking first place. A position that is currently held by probably the lightest VR4 ever /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worthy.gif

Hopefully after Nov 20th you'll have reason to update it again /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif

Gizmo has a new intercooler on the way, nearly double the size of the current spearco, hopefully we can squeeze a 9" thick intercooler above the trans.

Great passes guys. If you get that to hook a little better and stay off knock retard that car will run well into the 9's. If I were to guess that GT37 will Max out on power around that 42-44psi mark. Good luck with the record.

PS you can rev a 2.3 a lot higher then 8800rpm.

Can't wait until YOU launch the car and I get that boost control solenoid in there for you!

Thank you John, without competition life would be boring… . I generally don’t care about the record but being so close we might as well give it a shot. Of course we have no misconception that a 3300lb car is at a serious disadvantage to a 2300lb car… we will give it hell and see what happens - if nothing else it will keep things interesting.

It's a much better solution than spending $6000+ on a dog box and twin disk clutch. (and still ET slower)

Stock Automatic FTW /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yes the drive train is cheep but I do not have a dog box.. yet, and I do run a twin disk but I still ET and MPH faster then anyone else with a GVR4, even at the same boost and with a much slower 60' then some.

This was, I think, the 5th time at the track since the auto swap.

I know this was my 5th time to the track with this setup, but the first 2 times from this year were at Grove Creek an 1/8th mile track. I only have 10 runs total on this setup, and over 2 years of R and D, blood sweet and tears. This record run was on my 4th full and final 1/4 mile pass of the 2011 season.

Quoting NateCrisman:
I think we can take the #1 GVR4 spot with about 300hp less than #1062 makes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif We are about .25 seconds off the record right now on a less than ideal pass. I would bet the car doesn't even crack 650whp.

I know my car ran a 9.65@154mph with a 1.755 60' time. this was at 38psi and the car made 680AWHP at that boost level. This was also at a 2600lb race weight. I doubt the car you are working with makes 380awhp on an AWD Dyno Dynamics chassis dyno.

Quoting NateCrisman:
It is what it is, we are chasing GVR4 #1062 that is some tube frame and obviously much lighter than #431. That's the goal, not just some arbitrary ET we pull out of a hat. (that's what we would be doing if this was a 1g DSM...since the "record" for dsm is in the 7's).

I only have a tubular front end, not uncommon in real race cars. And inside is just a 8.50@150 certified chassis. If you think 7s are out then we are racing a totaly differnt game. The main reason for cutting the front end off and having a removable clip was to make it easy to work on the car, a thing that came in handy that friday night before the record run as Ryan and I installed the tranny.

Quoting NateCrisman:
plugs gapped tighter to .016 to hopefully let it run clean at 42-43psi of boost.

I was on the verge of not being able to run at local tracks also. I will have a list of safty items to work out over winter, the chassis is certified now, 1 down 6 to go. My plugs were gapped at .018" which did not have an issue on the 9.6 run, but miss fired 3 times on the 9.45 run, running in that 42psi range.

Quoting NateCrisman:

Good luck with that, I have a sperco water to air, and my IAT are around 100deg with ambiant air at 80deg. It can be cooler with ice added to the heat exchanger but ends up close to that 100deg mark at the end of the run. The 9.45 run was no ice, just cool water from only running for about 10min total that morning.

Quoting niterydr:

Yes right now I just hold the RPM at what ever and slip lauch the car. The 9.45 run was a slip launch from 7000rpm, so limiting the boost in 1st gear and launching with a 2 step next year will help A LOT. Just look at DSM times.org and find some one else with a 1.745 60' time and tell me how fast they go... 10.15 something.

Also I am on drag radials, I have put 800 street miles, or 70 some gallons of E98 on/threw the car this year, one night I drove 70 miles in a slight mist/rain.

Good luck at the track, keep pushing what is possible other wise we will not move forward.

Hahaha, well, don't' take all my quotes too personally. Im just pointing out that Gizmo's car only has one advantage over yours: efficiency. We are certainly outgunned in power and we are outgunned in total weight, both categories that #431 doesn't have the mechanicals to put up a fight. We are going to have to make due with a 1.3 launch and putting 100% of the power me make to the track for 100% of the time (automatic FTW).

If you can get 1062 to make a semi-reasonable 1.500 launch and make every gear change with the throttle to the floor, we aren't going to have anything for you. Nelson and I were talking about that just yesterday. hahaha

We totally hear you in starting with a heavy GVR4 4dr car vs a lighter 1g when chasing a #. But unfortunately, one cannot claim the bragging rights of Worlds Fastest GVR4 by building a Talon AWD.

The weight loss & safety equipment Nelson is considering is this:
[*]Adding in a roof halo and 2 dash bars to the roll bar to pass NHRA cert for 8.50-9.99. No biggie, they can go through the factory dash speaker holes for a clean looking install. Won't be in the way at all.
[*]ditching the electric seat belts: it's redundant when you have 5pt harnesses.
[*]race seat: Not an option in a 9sec car.
[*]some weight loss of items that aren't used or needed: Rear seat belts. The AC box under the dash. The ABS wiring and sensors. The sway bars. Nitrous kit parts (we haven't used the nitrous kit since last year, but are carrying the kit down the track in dead weight)
[*]I think we can get away without a parachute since the car shouldn't need to trap 150 to go low low 9's.
He's going to leave the body looking all stock. The interior/dash/carpet/plastics ect are all going to stay in. It should look like a streetcar, as much as possible to run 9's legally. But to put all this effort and money into making the car as fast & powerful as it is to not run it up to potential....blasphemy! It runs consistent 9's now, it would be an utter shame to not finish up the safety equipment and run it out full blast. Slowing it down to the 10's where it's legal would be disappointing Im sure, knowing we had the potential and ability to take the record. And it's not like the car is realistically any more street worthy at 10.0 legal than it is at 9.9 legal since the only difference is the roof halo, dash bars, and race seat. (many of the GVR4's on here are everyday drivers w/ race seats and none calls "BS- that's not a streetcar" on them.)

As for all the Streetcar talk. REALLY...the car runs on drag slicks. It LOOKS like a streetcar, that's what matters to him. It runs on drag slicks and is trailered to the track and has a 2.5gal fuel cell and open down pipe. It's not a daily driver or useful for any real mode of transportation. Go look at any of the really fast GVR4's in this league: 1062, Dan, Garage Defeat, Raif: none of those cars were "transportation". when you get into low 10 and 9 second cars, it's just kinda ridiculous to think they are something you can go get groceries, take on a road trip w/ the kids in the back, and click of a 9.8 pass without changing parts. Really...what do you guys think this car would run on real everyday street radial tires? It would be spinning through 3 gears and likely smeared against the wall. Lucky to get 1.8 60' times. IE...a complete waste of potential.

You are never going to get away without the safety stuff, I know that but it is nice to think the race seat could be swapped out the wheels/tyres changed and it would still almost be a street car with a back seat. I guess it might be a bit rowdy in there with only a down pipe though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

Don't take anything I said personally Nate. You've set your goals high and that's commendable and the competition you have isn't someone to be taken lightly as you have pointed out so it's obvious you are going to have to pull out all the stops. It would as you said be sort of sacrilege if you didn't allow the car to reach it's full potential. I know more than likely if my car ever gets finished people will most likely look at it that way (a car that will never reach it's full potential because of the compromises I have made). I just don't have access to any drag strips over here so I'd never be able to own a 'track car'.

Anyone that knows me will tell you that I absolutely HATE to leave performance on the table, I have an OCD condition with regard to getting a car/setup to run up to potential. (still pisses me off I only got 10.8@131 out of my GVR4, I was much more satisfied with the 12.0 on 14b).

We are planning to make one more attempt this season, either sunday the 20th at Etown or the 22nd at Atco. Either track hasn't seen the car yet, so we can make a couple 1/8mile passes to sort out our issues and tune before making a full pass and getting the boot for safety equipment. Gizmo seems to be thinking about doing the safety equipment and getting an NHRA lisc so as to keep pushing the car quicker next season. Maybe we will get it significantly lighter and push the engine parts a little harder to be real competition to 1062 on the weight/power areas. We have the advantage in driveline, and IMHO, no manual trans will ever hold a candle to the stock automatic, even a $$$ dogbox. Given the same power to weight ratio, we'll always ET faster. Our biggest issue is going to be gearing. We can't fit a taller tire under tehe GVR4 body and we are rpm limited in drive (3rd gear). We aren't going to be able to run 150+mph due to gearing unless we go back to a 2.0L.

We are locked & loaded to run at Etown tomorrow in hopes of improving the ET a few tenths.

Changes:

[*]Changed the liquid intercooler to a 9" thick core. (double size)
[*]D2 coilover's installed in rear.. much stiffer, less squat
[*]Alignment to zero toe and camber at anticipated launch body angle
[*]Put in a light racing seat to save ~32lb vs stock leather seat
[*]Removed misc weight: oem electric seatbelts, ABS electric stuff, nitrous kit, & minor cleanup maybe 70lb out
[*]upgraded huge rear axles (+10lb)
[*]Gapping plugs down to .015 (bought enough plugs for new set every run if needed)
[*]Turning the shift RPM box up to see 8000rpm gear changes (the 9.6 was done with 1-2 shift before the 60')
[*]Planning to use DSMlink's "boost by gear" to drop some boost in first gear to make it hook up
[*]Planning to turn boost up to about 44psi and add some ignition timing.
Im hoping for good track prep and solid run. I personally think it's capable of a 1.35 launch and 9.3 @ 147 if all the stars line up. That includes the track not giving us the boot for lacking NHRA license before getting the stars lined up.

Ill be posting to facebook tomorrow, and will post a summary tomorrow night here with all the info, pics, vids, ect. Good news or bad news. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good luck at the track, get the that record so we can all push hard next year. On the dyno I had to gap my plugs to. 013 @44psi.

Thanks for the tip. We were at .018 at 40psi and it ran clean. From that point I went up one single "click" on the boost control table in DSMlink putting the duty cycle from 41.7% to 43.8% which made boost go from 40.5 to 42.5psi. That was enough to make it misfire like crazy. One thing Im not sure of is how the larger intercooler will affect the boost control setting. If the old one was restrictive at this flow level, and had some pressure drop, we "should" pick up boost pressure at the same solenoid duty cycle (which might throw a wrench into our plans)

I'll go down to like .014 on the plugs right away then. Thanks again.

First test pass was 6.3@102 letting off before 1/8mile. Ran a 4.128 330' which was on par with the best pass last week with a wimpy 1.52 launch. Good crisp 1-2 and 2-3 shifts! Finally! Boost at 40, no misfires. Solid traction. I toonered a bit and we are In lane for a full pass with the launch set for kill.
