359/2000's new heart

Picked this car up last month. The motor was in bas shape. And so was the tranny. I have just a few more parts before I can drop the motor in. And the tranny I hope will go back together some time this week or next. I leave for Bonneville on the 12th, I am hoping to have it all at least assembled by then. But I have spent a bunch more than anticipated and am basically waiting on another check before I go.

65mm turbo
.040" over topline pistons
.010/.010" turned crank
Reconditioned stock rods
Clevite bearings
Ebay 38mm wastegate
Modified and rewelded ebay T3 manifold
And a few small tricks here and there. Just enough to hopefully make it reliable. Looking for 350-400whp when it is said and done. On stock cams, head and intake.
And yes, that is all that there is to the exhaust. Less than a foot of 2.5" pipe.

May I humbly suggest that you install an inline filter in your turbo oil feedline...

The only filtered oil on that style housing comes from the angled port that you have plugged.

I assumed on all the housings that the top right port was filtered.

Been meaning to do a how-to on the '90 oil fitler housing and cooler set-up, but haven't had the time to get better pics or do the write up. (shaddup Curtis /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif )

Here's the outer port.

Note that it's fed by the lower passageway


Here's the filter side of things ('91 style lefty/ '90 style righty)

Hopefully, you can see the drilling for the port you've tapped (arrow) is in the same passageway that feeds the outside of the filter.

The oil filter is fed from the outside, and filtered oil goes up the center tube.

The only filtered oil with this style housing is the angled big center port.

How about some pictures or explanation for the 90 air cooled housing? I run that on the other car. I will swap the line before the motor goes in tonight.

So that is the filtered side on the 90? If so I am wrong there as well. Again, I was told the top right ports were all the filtered ones. That is what I get for not looking and taking someone's word for it.

I do see it now that it has been pointed out to me. I will have to wait on the race car until I bring it home. But I will adjust the galant tonight.

Awhile back we had a thread running here that had me wondering about how the oil cooler set-up actually works, and where the best place was to tap the housing for an oil line to feed the turbo.

I've seen all manner of different configurations to feed the turbo, and a few write-ups that conflicted/didn;t match what I was seeing on the housings I had in front of me.

If you start with the premise that the oil filters from the outside of the filter to the center, the best and only sure way to know you're recieving filtered oil is to shine a light down the center hole of the filter housing and use a port that you can see light thru.

After I sober up (tomorrow or the next day /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif ), I'll re-check a few housings and post up something that makes sense

There is a good 4-6" of clearance to the strut. Motor slid right in last night.

Regarding your water pump drive belt...
How are you going to ensure it stays tight? There is zero adjustment. Is this really a good idea?

I'm not sure if my relocated alternator is going to want to hit the frame, so i picked up a 94 water pump/power steering pulley, and power steering pump. I'll figure a way to make it work. I'm hoping it doesn't hit the frame so it will be easy.

Keeping power steering seems to present more problems when relocating the alt.
