Quoting conradical:
Do you guys think it would be worth a rebuild because I dont really want to spend the money on a new one. Im not even sure what it would cost to rebuild it or what? Also it was said to just drive it till it blows Im not sure if that is what I want to do. Any advise would be great. Thanks guys.
If you are not going to get this turbo rebuilt run it. Think of it this way, if you would have never removed your manifold, you would never even know the turbo was damaged. There were probably no indicators in the way the car ran that told you the turbo was damaged right? So throw it back on and run it. Now, if you do want to save this turbo and get it rebuilt you may not want to run it. Keep in mind the damage is enough to where the turbine wheel is definitely out of balance. This will eventually wear out your shaft seals, cause oil leakage, poor performance, and who knows what else. Also, little chips of turbine will probably continue to fall off and get shot into the exhaust since the blades are all chewed up. That's only going to get worse with time. Outside of that, only the turbo can get more damaged by continuing use. If you rebuild it now you may avoid any more damage that could result by using your turbo it it's current damaged state. For example, the center shaft may not be damaged now, but could be damaged later if operated with the damaged out of balance turbine. Again, this is just a what if. The center shaft may already be damaged, in which case, there's all the more reason to just run it until it can be replaced. Now I don't know if this is your DD or what your money situation is, but I kinda see it like this...
1. Run your turbo in its current state and see what happens. You can drive your car. Find a deal on a new turbo in the mean time. (
