Before I go off and get myself into trouble, I wanted to ask you fine folks here a question. If I was to bump up the compression to 8:5 to 1 from the original 7:8, and kept everything else stock (turbo, cams, etc), what supporting mods would I need to make this work? I'm assuming some type of ignition control and a good tune, but I want your input. Mind you, this is a "what if" question. It would be for a daily driver, and I'm not looking for super Hp or anything.

you would want ecmlink and pull timing. 1g dsm and vr4 ecu's run extremely advanced timing and can cause detonation under load.

Like said above me the timing tables in a stock ECU are retarded. They jump around to fast and are very aggressive in the high load cells. More compression is a wonderful thing but a good tune is the single most important and noticeable mod you can do to your car. The absolute first thing I would do to any 1G/GVR4 after maintenance is a 2G/3G MAF and DSMLink. A good tune even on an otherwise stock car is very noticeable.
