Hey all, im replacing my master and my booster on my vr4. Does it matter if i get a master cylinder without ABS? at work i looked up a booster for the galant and only one that comes up is the one without ABS??? Look up the master and i have the option of ABS or non?? kinda confused, can someone help out. Thanks in advanced.


NOTE; I am removing my abs system in the future, so I dont know if matters.

If you get a non abs one its possible it'll be for a na car with a smaller bore.

I just bought the parts to do a 3G upgrade from Rock Auto. The bore size is bigger, not to mention it puts the reservoir on the master cylinder for a much cleaner look

Yep, just the booster and master cylinder. Everything bolts right up. 8G Galants use the same parts as well. Also, I would just delete abs now while you were at it.

2000 Eclipse with no abs or traction control.

There was only one brand of brake booster, and it has a $40 core charge. I forget which brand master cylinder I bought. I am heading to my storage shortly, I can let you know

It sounds like you've already made your mind up, but you can use a early q45 master also. You have to bend the lines and shave the reservoir fittings a tiny bit. Otherwise, it bolts up also. I took the idea from one of Curtis's write ups(linked above) and liked what he had to say, so I did it. Works well with the Brembo's.

How can you tell when a booster has gone bad?

Your brakes will get hard even with proper vacuum applied.

If its super soft, thats probably what it is. If you have a way of applying vacuum to the master cylinder reservoir, it'll pull all the air out. At least thats what I do at work.

I use this specific tool, but as you might be able to tell, it may be difficult to adapt it to a gvr4 brake fluid reservoir. I've seen people use old reservoir caps and install a barbed fitting. This works really really well, but if you don't have one and have an extra person around, of course, you can just bleed them normally.

Oh, ok i see. Yea i think ill try and bleed them the normal way. Ive never bench bleed a master, But i do know how to do it. My question is when i finally get all the air out of the master and remove the lines, will fluid keep coming out the master where the fitting go into? And have to screw in the brake lines in pretty quick before the resevoir runs out of fluid?

I'm not sure how you would do this on a gvr4 master, but on master cylinder that have the reservoir mounted directly, I just leave the reservoir cap on and it keeps the fluid inside. Once you take the cap off, it'll start running out.
