I was reading the factory manual on checking the TPS, and they call for some special tool. Is there another way to check this thing for the .48-.52V its supposed to be at?

Depends on what you have, a datalogger will tell you the voltage, as will a SAFC using it's sensor check page. You can also probe the pins at the ECU side.

Be careful with the TPS VFAQ, you can't really set the TPS correctly by resistance without doing the math for a voltage divider using the actual total resistance of your TPS to figure out what the correct resistance is for the one leg.

I usually just slip a skinny paper clip(s) through the back side of the connector, then hook them to a volt meter with some wire and alligator clips. Get the voltage where it needs to be and lock the bolts down.
