Tranny code question

Hello,

I just bought a tranny for my awd talon and it ended up being the wrong one. I'm trying to figure out exactly what application this model tranny goes on and from what I've gathered it looks like it's possibly a Galant GSX tranny. Just curious if anyone could verify this for me. The model number on the tranny is W5M312VPXZ

I dont see a VPXZ in the listing I have.

All of the above are compatible with the GVR4 3 bolt and the 1G 4 bolt rear diffs.

wq -> is for the GVR4 RS and the evo1
evo2 and evo3 -> trannies each have letters that are different from all of the above and from one another.

The wq and evo2 and evo3 trannies DO NOT work with the US GVR4 3 bolt nor the US 1G 4 bolt rear diffs. The above data was gathered from multiple lists over a period of two years. I have found no exceptions to date.


PS -- As an FYI there are some wierd ones, for which I cannot comment about their compatibility with US cars. I'd stay away from these. They are:

nr -> unknown
f5m332sp -> unknown
w5m33?nn -> unknown
w5m33?mn -> unknown


W5M31 is a non turbo galant gsx

 

A 31 is a galant GSX tranny.

The "V" indicates the final drive ratio of the diff in the trans, so if the "V" matches as it does according to the list provided, it should work. It may have other different ratios or such inside the trans, but the final drive should match.

 

So the V is the final drive ratio, that's what I needed to know.

the ending of my tranny is WQEK i believe. i have a front lsd stock as well, had to get a special inner axle cup/splines from japan. i have a reciept for a replaced ring gear, so i dont know if that changed the final drive in the tranny, but it works for sure. i had it checked and checked it myself. i think it was an rs tranny or something. kinda wierd... definately have no idea why it works in my car...

 

We should create a definitive list of tranny codes, and decode once and for all the last letters of each tranny.

At any rate, thought I'd add my latest transmission to the list:

W5M33-2-NRWE also PD3099

Has a factory front viscous LSD, and a 3.545 final ratio. I believe the third letter 'W' signifies the Front VLSD.

It's out of a 1992 1.8 Turbo Lancer GSR 4WD

also

W5M33-2-NRBE

Same as above but minus the front VLSD

 

mine is something like bms5569-wqek. that doesnt sound right

 

nevermind, it was w5m332wqek. front lsd, and it works. anyone know what it came out of?

Pull the axles and if you can see through the diff. it's a LSD, if you see a crossbar is a STD open diff.

I bought my tranny from the infamous.... Manny Alvarez. This kid was a total nuisance to deal with, and I would NEVER do that again... HOWEVER, I did get a good tranny AND transfer case from him, even though it took over 2 months of constant nagging to get.

My transmission code is.

C51PH-FM7654

He claimed this was one of the "stronger" GVR4 trannies, and that it had double sleaved synchros on some of the gears etc.

I am currently running this transmission on my '94 TSi AWD with a 4bolt rear.

He sold that same tranny to at least 3 people that I know of. If you actually received it, you're extremely fortunate. Even more fortunate if it works.

Back on topic.

I've got a switchable FWD/AWD tranny and transfer case that came attached to a JDM RS motor with the big 16g and yellow top 510 injectors.

The numbers stamped into the bellhousing are:

C50PH
EV2354

Any guesses on what the EV stands for?

My code is for a VR4 Evo,

W5M332WQNK MA1962

It was: non LSD front diff, close ratio box, 3.909 ratio.

W might be the diff ratio code as VR4 Evo, late VR4 RS, Evo 1&2 all use the 3.909 ratio, since this box has the same ratios as an Evo 1, and the VR4 RS, Q might be the gearset code, as the EVO 2/3 have a different gearset, N might be the non LSD/viscous LSD/plate LSD front diff code. K=?...steel selector forks?

Interesting that RTSGVR-4 had to get a special axle cup sent as I have just fitted a LSD to my gearbox and the standard axle cup went straight in...my is a plate type, maybe his is a viscous?

I wonder how this code relates to the rear end? I had a 3.909 4-spider viscous with 4ws. Unfortunately, there is no marking on the pumpkin.

I talked the guys at Ralliart a while ago about this, and the head mechanic said that the switchable transmission was an option on early VR4s (87-89?). I took this to mean the KM255 gearbox, but as there is a C50PH code for the W5M33 gearbox, he could have meant the gearboxes that were built before MMC started putting the four letter code on. I have never heard of a switchable Evo 1.

Also, I have just checked the code of my brother-in-law's Evo 2 gearbox which is going in his auto VR4:

W5M332WPGE. It appears to have an open front diff. And he doen't want to open it up to check.

So the W probably is the 3.909 diff, and the 'P' is maybe the gearset? Maybe the 'E' means Lancer, and the 'K' on my gearbox means Galant? (except for last of the US VR4 gearboxes which may have been in the US for T/E/L and used in the VR4.)

Afterthought: Maybe the fourth letter relates to the bellhousing, you know, 'cause the Lancers use a mount on the housing, and Galants have the mount on the engine.

I saw an article from a transmission rebuilder way back that the letters after the W5M3x-???? were meaningless - they referred to the bill of materials used to put together that specific trans type and did not inherently specify configuration. In other words, the letters / numbers after W5M33 [which do consistently indicate trans type] are meaningless without the internal Mitsu cross reference to the parts used.
