My advice is to haul it as far away from Aamco as possible and send the tranny to a reputable builder that's known for Mitsubishi transmissions.

Why in the world would you waste your money on an AAMCO shade-tree rebuild?? I've never seen/heard of a rebuild done that is close to decent at a place like that, especially on a car like ours if you are putting down any more than stock power and like to drive it spiritedly.

Better yet, use that same money for a Shep/Jack's/TRE entry level rebuild. You'll end up using a lot less money in the long run, and you won't have a shitty transmission.

As said, go get the car 'before they start to pull anything off it'!!!1!!!!! Send the tranny out to Shep Trans, Jack Trans, TRE or any of the other Mitsu tranny performance specialist. You must do it before they start to pull anything otherwise they're going to charge you a min of $350 for trying to diagnosing the problem.

THIS!THIS!THIS!THIS!

I had a buddy in Albuquerque that blew up 3rd gear on his 2g GST. He ended up taking it to AAMCO. Tranny broke like.. 3 more times before he gave up and sold the car. Each time AAMCO "rebuilt" the transmission. So yeah, those guys will make your transmission a pile of junk. Take it out, and send it to Shep/TRE/Jacks'/English Racing etc to get it fixed right.

I rebuilt my own a few years ago, dropping major coin on all the parts I wanted. If/when I do it over again, I will call jackstransmissions.com and tell him what my goals are and have him decide what to build it up with.

For most of us, Evo shift fork, double sinchroed 2nd & 3rd & dsm 1st gear. As long as none of the major parts aren't damaged that should do.

The easiest way is to call up, and tell them your situation. If you are really only planning on daily driving it, they will probably do a basic build and fix anything that is busted. It will probably shift pretty dang nice after that and serve you very well. Not uncommon to be able to get a build like that for under $1000, or well under $1000 depending.

Get a stock rebuild with a DSM 1st gear and a 4 spider center diff. It'll be under $1,500 but well worth it. Should hold around 450 lbs/tq

If you can find a 1st gen DSM trans already then you can save yourself $300+ dollars because they don't have to convert the GVR-4 1st gear into a DSM gear.

He doesn't need anything more than a stock rebuild with a double syncro second gear.

Diego, I highly recommend just calling http://www.sheptrans.com/, http://www.teamrip.com/index.html, Jack's Transmission and telling them what is wrong with your transmission, what your goals for your car are, and they will tell you what will be a good build for that. The only thing they will probably suggests other than replacing worn or broken parts is a double syncro second gear. That is a good upgrade for relatively little money. Even then, if you ONLY daily drive your car and you make stock power, a properly rebuilt stock transmission will drive fine.

don't put a gvr4 first gear back in the box, whatever you do. If you have the money, an evo3 first & 5th would be a nice swap, since they're a bit taller. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

When did this shift from everyone swapping to a GVR4 first gear to swapping to a 1GDSM or EVO3 first gear occur? It used to be nobody wanted a DSM first gear because it was too short and pretty much useless.

GVR-4 1st gear is longer but weaker. It's a trade off honestly. Would you prefer to have a longer 1st that could break easily if you're making good power or something a little shorter that you know will last longer (normally).

Depends on who's driving the car. If its Terry driving then it wont make it around the block.

there are many people who have stripped the teeth off the GVR4 first gear at power levels well below what you'd think of as "omg going to break mad parts!" Not to mention that the only gear in the box that's as weak as the GVR4 first is 4th gear which everyone knows is a giant turd as well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

I wouldn't put it back in my car if the power level was stock, fwiw.

The explanation I got from Jon at TRE is that the original OEM gears for the GVR4 were fine and very strong. The new run of gears the factory made that are now stocked as the replacements are not as strong and will break as mentioned. That's why a DSM or E3 first gear is ideal.

I have a DSM one in mine and hardly notice it's shorter. It works quite well for slowly rolling around parking lots looking for......an open spot. Yeah, an open spot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hsugh.gif

The first gear I blew in 1051 was the OEM gear the car came with new, so I'm not so sure about TRE's theory.
