To answer one question, here is how to check the codes: vfaq.com
Try using the search function next time for common questions like this one, such as a search for: +engine +check +code

Some of the other guys should be able to help with the rest of the problems, good luck man.

Edit: on second thought, sounds kinda like when my TPS wasn't set correctly...

A DSM ECU shouldn't cause a CEL. You will run a little lean at idle, at least until the LOW TRIM richens it up, because the GVR-4 has a missing honeycomb in the MAS. But, other than that a 1991-94 DSM ECU will run fine. If its a 1990 DSM ECU you need to swap pins 6 & 14 in the harness.

It's going to be very tough for Jeff to guess what's causing that light without more information.

I'd check to make sure the TPS is adjusted correctly. From what I remember, the ECU seeing sensor voltages other than what it expects during the conditions it's seeing are what cause it to light the CEL. Time to break out the voltmeter or datalogger and check/adjust accordingly.
