De-chroming 92 tail lights

Someone backed into my car last month, I sourced a set of 92 tails but im not a fan of the chrome trim. Has anyone tried swapping the black molding from the 91 lights?

What I did was mask off around the trim ring and scuff up the chrome and shot it with some spray paint. So far its holding up but ideally I would want to remove the trim from the lights and paint them off the car.

Maybe Plasti-dip would hold up better than normal spray paint
