The sensor is not needed. It's just an overheat sensor that lights up on the dash if your cat gets too hot. I just zip tied mine up out of the way. There is a little cage you can tuck it up into.

Correct. You are not disconnecting the circuit, but rather keeping the sensor from sensing the temperature, which is what turns the trans overheat light on.
