Bought a talon today and the guy told me that the transfer case had a bolt you could remove to make the 2wd. Can anyone tell me any more on this? how strong are they? what do they come in? do they even exist?

^^ it can be used with a welded center diff and is useful when you want to tow the car without needing a flatbed.

True, but if he doesn't have a welded centre and thinks that the car will run fine in 2wd with the transfer unlocked then he is going to have trouble.

The switchable t-case came paired with a lockable centre diff in the gearbox on very early (87, possibly 88) JDM vr4's.

or a matching switchable gearbox.

It's no stronger than a stock t-case - if it is an all alloy case (like the rest of the early jdm vr4's) it's a weak p.o.s.

Steel head t-cases ftw.
