Curious what methods folks have found most effective. I am putting in a new engine and clutch. No work on the transmission. Does it come out easily enough through the top by itself or do I go ahead and pull the whole engine/trans together? Or...out the bottom?

Thanks for your contributions from experience.

I pull the engine from the top with cherry picker on at the drivers side fender, I found it easier to pull the engine with the transmission.

I have always pulled and put in from the top in the past, but now that I have a lift, I am going to try the bottom up method next time.

I always drop the transmission out the bottom and pull the motor from the top. Install is in reverse. Transmission is easy enough to just lean over the fender and muscle it up from the ground into position.

The only detail I have to add is, when I remove the engine and transmission together, and from the top, I always use an engine hoist level to angle the transmission such that it clears the passenger wheel well area. Otherwise, I always perform this task from top as I found I have to have the chassis just too high off the ground to clear the bottom of the radiator support. However, if I were to remove it from the bottom, I would drop the block and transmission onto a pallet with casters for mobility.
