Project Thread: 46/1000 - UPDATED 5/5/11 - Budget Shortfalls...

Hey guys, thought I'd reintroduce myself to those of you who don't know me and let you know about my project. My name is Stephen, I'm 17 years old, and still in high school. Yep, I know, I'm really young haha. I picked up my first VR-4 at age 15 (313/1000), which I sold to get a 1GA at the same age. Last year at age 16, I sold the 1G to get my older brother (DC_Style's) KG VR-4 (46/1000). Anyhow, being into the 4G63 platform has been part of my family since I can remember. My older brothers owned a green VR-4 (can't recall the badge #) and I rode in that car when I was 10. That pretty much set me on having a VR-4. As of right now, my brother Dan (sixsixtwo) has a VR-4, and I have 46/1000. Up until now, I was daily driving my VR-4 to high school, work, and around the cities.

Last winter the VR-4 was stored, and this year I decided to store it as well. MN roads and salt are hell for our cars. Having made 388WHP @ 23 PSI on my old 20G setup (which is for sale), I decided to do a little restoration and go a little bigger. My goals this winter are to pull the old motor, refresh it, powdercoat all the main parts at work, respray the engine bay, spray the bottom of the car with undercoating, fix my driveshaft, and do some light body work. With my new setup (undecided) I plan to hit 450+ WHP.

I'll be updating this thread with new pictures and whatnot as I make more progress. All work so far has been done by me. So far I have:

1. Pulled the intake/FMIC piping.
2. Partially unplugged the wiring harness
3. Removed the turbo and exhaust manifold
4. Removed some other misc items.

Thanks guys. Clean and tidy because throughout the pulling process I have been very meticulous about putting bolts in bags, and zip-tying wires against each other.

I am thinking of an HX35 or 40, but I may go with an SC turbo of some sort.

I love 46! I also think its cool that the orgs youngest member(i think you're still the youngest) has one of the hottest 4's. The family backround is also cool. When I was 16 I had a semi trick 85' 5.0 that I put a 306 in and I thought I was bada$$! She was clean but the VR4 is so unique and Mustangs are like belly buttons, everyone has one!!! So are you 1of 3 brothers all of which have or had a VR4?? ..... oh the heartbreak! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bawling.gif

Update - 3PM or so on 11/26/10

Took the RPF-1's off the front end to remove the axles. Looking at the 3KGT brakes, I was in awe of how big they were. Sometimes I forget that they're that big!

Drained the transmission. Wow, it looked horrible, tons of metal shavings everywhere, and a horrible burnt smell. I was told that the fluid was changed a while back, but apparently not.
This might explain some of the rough shifting.

Zip-tied all the wires and lines etc against the walls of the engine bay. Put the chain in position for the pull.

Left to do before pull:
1. Pull transfer case.
2. Remove motor mounts.
3. Pull engine.

Assuming I'm still motivated to do anything today, I'll have it out and on the ground tonight.

Update 7PM on 11/26/10

Grabbed the help of my brother Dan (sixsixtwo) to help with the pesky motor mounts. We had already removed the transfer case.

The motor started to come out pretty easily. We had to rock it a bit for it to come out.

And it's out. Woohoo! As you can tell, this is a 4G63 owner garage. Note the turbos and etc sitting on the shelf behind the engine/transmission.

Empty engine bay, soon to be cleaned, tucked, and painted.

46/1000's heart, lying on the ground. It had 155-155-155-154 before it was pulled. I may do a little replacing of gaskets here and there. It will be cleaned
and many of the parts will be powdercoated.

Yep, good progress today, and the engine is out. I'm going to give it a rest for a few days now. Enjoy the pictures guys!

Update 12:40 AM on 11/28/10

Took the car out of the garage today to clean it up a tiny bit.

Went at it with some Simple Green and hot water, it turned out much better than it was before. It still needs to be powerwashed and such.

Pulled the head off the block. Pistons were in good shape, with some carbon buildup. Bores were clean, and crosshatching was evident. Looks to be stock bore.

Pulled the oil pan off. Oil pickup was spotless, this made me pretty happy, the bottom end looked clean as well.

Took a look inside the exhaust ports, and there was bit of buildup, nothing too severe though.

Pulled the valve cover, and the head was spotless, and again very clean. Cams showed normal wear.

Intake and exhaust valves all appeared to be in good shape, with some normal build up.




Probably going to go with some sort of MLS HG and some quality headgasket on this build. The head already has BC272's in in.

The motor will probably get 2G pistons on 1G rods, and a Kiggly girdle. The head will get hot tanked, resurfaced, as well the block, for the new HG.

If pulling my motor apart has shown me anything, it is that the use of a good synthetic oil, changed at reasonable intervals, will keep your internals spotless. I use Amsoil 10W-30 every 5K, and my head, oil pickup, rods, and bores were spotless.

May I ask... if the motor has fantastic compression, why bother with swapping to 2g pistons. Not worth it IMO.

I basically did the same thing back in winter '03. Compression was good so I left the bottom end alone. Had the head freshened up and decked, checked the block for flatness and threw on a Mitsu MLS HG and some ARP's and it's been fine ever since.

Thanks so much for the support, and comments guys. In response to having a build bottom end, we were told by the guy who sold us the car a few years back that the bottom end was built. Apparently not. When I compression tested it, I knew it was all stock after getting one 155 reading. Turbowop, thanks for the advice, I think I'll keep just the stock pistons and go MLS and ARP's. 2G pistons are out of the question now I guess.
