Couldn't find much info that pertians to my question. When you shut off an engine, is it normal for the lifters to collapse a bit from sitting, or should they all be extended?
See in pic how some lifters are raised, yet some are pushed down. Working on friends car with odd issues, and saw this. Never paid enough attention to know for sure.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure some of the lifters will be lower than the others due to the cam lobes pushing them down. But the lifters should stay pumped up. I know that when your lifters are bad, ie you hear them clicking away when you start your car, you can pull them out and compress them by hand. Not much in my experience, but a little is all it takes.

Yup. That is normal. If you look, the compressed ones have the cam lobes down. If you ever need to change them out, you have to get all the spring pressure off and rotate the engine to the back side of the lobe.

if your ever worried about a dead lifter in there, just grab the rocker and try to move it. if the rocker mover its probably a dead lifter. you have to keep rotating the crank so each rocker is at the back side of the lobe on the cam to check for movement. yours look fine, but just for future reference.
