Good evening,

I am confused, I've heard there were GVR4s from japan coming with 14b, small and big 16g turbos. But I have only found the 14b version. Since the japanese GVRs have 240hp, I think a small 16g is possible for a stock whereas a big 16g doesn't seem to be stock. Anyway, I'm guessing, can somone help me out here?

Stock (manual JDM) VR4 turbos are the TD05H-14B and later the TD05H-16G6 with the drivetrain change.
This is the 'Big 16g', or "16G" as the rest of the world knows it. The 'Evo 3 16G' is a completely different compressor wheel. TD05H-16G6 =/= TD05H-16G6-7
I have never encountered any vehicles fitted with the 'small 16g' from the factory.

Edit: I'm getting slower in my old age, left off the second 6!

Thank you very much RedTwo!
Do you have a VIN for a 16G VR4? Or the parts number?

Cause I want to put a 16G in my mirage and in Germany we have the TÜV that needs to be convinced that the rest of the car is capable of the newfound power. Thats why I would like to refer to a GVR4 with 16G I already found two turbos with my mitsu dealer.
MD168040 (14b) 09.1987 - 02.1989 (old part number MD134055)
MD198923 (13G) 02.1989 (old part number MD157737) (standard for AT?)
MD171222 (16G) 02.1989 (standard for MT?)

Since the part number changes ~February 1989, are the build in turbos the 16Gs after that? Are both 16g? Is there a list of mitsubishi part numbers related to the T/C numbers?

As far as I found out:
MD168040 49178-01010 49178-01030 49178-01400 49178-01410 14b
MD191317 49178-01450 EVO1 16G
MR187776 49178-01460 EVO2 16G
MR239346 49178-01470 EVO3 16G

Post what you have and I will add it and tell me if I made a mistake

@tektik: There are some more 16g than just the Evo III - its the one making most power but there are even different turbos between the Evo I - III.

You will find the 16G turbos on the August 1990 onward models.

Compressor housing number is 49178-01420. This is the original turbo from my 1991 JDM Galant VR-4 Evolution, the one with 240PS.

Interesting! We have a similar issue here but the solution requires letting a man borrow your car, thrash it around a bit and check the brakes will withstand 4 consecutive 100kph-0 stops Very high tech

Chassis No: E39A-0024837 (1.12.1990) SNPF VIN: 7A8CJ0J0796024837 (This may not be much use as I believe the VINs used on New Zealand registered cars are unique to NZ)

The VR4 16G (49178-01420):
MD171222 Turbo sub assembly
MD613623 Turbine housing
MD613683 CRHA
MD613653 Compressor cover

The MD198923 is the TD04-13G (I think) fitted to the automatic JDM VR4s
