***I'm not sure if a thread like this exists, so if it does, feel free to delete it.***

Hey guys,

This thread will be used to document in-cabin sound levels (Decibels) of exhaust setups.

We will use the android app "Sound Meter" found here: SOUND METER APP

I did not use the calibrate function of the app and please see app manual for phones that cannot register past 80db's.

All sound levels taken from window phone mount in center of dash over dash clock.

Please post your results following my example..

Current exhaust config:
Stock Manifold
Evo316g turbo
Stock O2 housing
Ebay 2.5" to 3" downpipe
Mil spec 3" race cat
generic 3" exhaust
Magnaflow oval muffler

Sound levels with windows closed all sounds (Radio, blower, etc) off.

Car off in quiet driveway = 30db
Idling = 60db
Cruising at 70mph = 75db
3rd gear WOT = ~82db

PLease post your data /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
While I know these will not be absolutely accurate, I believe we will get a relative comparison...maybe better than listening to youtube video's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Very cool idea, my piping came in today for the exhaust I'm going to make this weekend. I'll post my before and after results. I wish I would have thought of this last week before I threw out my stocker. I wonder what the db's on the stocker are??

I tested mine yesterday in the driveway with downpipe only. Windows up phone near the clock.

Car off: 30db
1000rpm idle: 60db
3000rpm: 55db
5500rpm two step: 62db

I didn't get my exhaust finished. I'll post the after numbers here ASAP.

That db reading seems way to low to me. I would of gotten mine today but I have a fuel leak I need to address.

Yeah it does seem low. Maybe because there was no load on the engine.

OK, finished the exhaust last night and drove it to work this morning. This is a full 3" mandrel bent, no cat, one vibrant muffler. I was pleasantly surprised how quiet it is. Barely louder than my old stocker (with rust small holes). The db app confirms. Windows up, phone near clock.

car off: 30db
car idle: 60db
45mph cruise: 62db
70mph cruise: 62db
3rd gear WOT to redline pull: 64db

I think putting this muffler on will solve your problem.
Vibrant Muffler I used

HP plays a huge roll in WOT db's. My car does not have a lot of HP. I have not had it on the dyno, but it runs a 13.4@101 at 15psi. s16g turbo. I hope to increase my WOT db's in the coming months /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Interesting results, what boost levels are you at?

I'm at 21-22 on my evo316g, tuned somewhat rich since I'm still on stock IC.

I'm at 15psi. 22psi will increase my db's. I hope to be there soon. I'll post the results at different boost levels.

I measured in at low 80's whether idling or anything else.

Yes, my car is obnoxious /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

I just tested that app in my office and the noise of the a/c registers 80db!

I thought my exhaust was quiet but judging from this it must be LOUD.

@Cheeky, That's strange, I only get 30db or so in a quiet room.

You must have a vented wastegate on that AC unit /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Maybe your phone's mic is more sensitive??? Have another phone to test with?

I think you have to go to a quiet room and calibrate it down to 30db.

Very interesting, that's very close to my setup and you're 10db more than me at cruise and WOT.

Do you know which Magnaflow you have? What phone are you using?

I'll check my magnaflow for model # if I can.

I will add it into my original post but I have all sound deadening taken out. With carpets still in. Might explaine the difference.
I'm using an old iPhone 4.

Magnaflow part number 14835
It's also about a year old so they will get louder with age.
