Why a vr4?

I was looking at selling my 70 mustang to buy another car. My short list is 300zx, mk3 supra, 240sx, miata, fox body mustang, fc rx7 and a vr4. I have had a buddy with a vr4 and he is very happy with it. I daily drive a e36 m3 and I'm looking for a project car that I can also drive when my m3 is on her period (its a m3 they can get bad). My baby is a 1967 mercury cougar so I have the whole old v-8 down good so I figured it was time to sell the mustang. I have owned a s13 240sx, a fox body mustang, mk3 supra and a fc x7 and loved them all so I know what I'm getting into there. Why should I get a vr4? (hint dont answer broken transmissions, boost leaks or balance shafts)

That is a hard question to answer but to give you some idea I am 20 and have owned 23 cars or so. I buy them fix them up and sell them. I worked at Advance Auto parts for 2 years. However while I have owned 2 turbo cars (mk3 supra and dodge shelby charger) I still feel as if my fuel injection/turbo knowledge is kind of lacking. My saving grace is one of best friends is Lonewolf64. I have a good network of friends who have turbo cars so even if I am lacking I have a good ability section around me.

For the hell of it here are some of my other builds:

1967 mercury cougar 351w( 10.75to1 compression edelbrock rpm cam and intake) 5 speed swap (only 351w 5 speed cougar)

mk3 supra automatic aftermarket intercooler, ct-57 turbo (stock ct-27 with a larger inducer wheel)boost controller, 3inch down pipe with cut-out

65 mustang 289 automatic pure stock

85 dodge shelby charger manual- ecu, boost controller, 3 inch exhaust, cold air clutch (low low 15 second car for $750 total invested)

1994 nissan d21 hard body pick-up 4.3L Chevy v-6 full size Chevy drivetrain custom dash 12inchs of lift 38 inch tires

70 mustang sitting at my collage house I still have some work to do before she is ready to sell.

I have a very similar list of cars I would buy if I didn't have my vr4, and I would say that none of them would be as fun out of the box unless the 300zx was a tt z32. Of course you could make any of these other cars as fun, but I think the vr4 is a better starting point.

This is quite funny because OP has an E36 M3 as a daily. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

I'm not sure that it's a forgone conclusion that everyone SHOULD get a vr4. My answer would be, "because you want one." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

If you are looking for a low-displacement turbo-charged vehicle with a lot of aftermarket support then it's a great choice. But, you have to be into the sleeper aspect too or you may as well spend less money on a low-mileage DSM and start there. If you go the supra route then you get to trade AWD for a v-6 and a transmission that'll stand up to more abuse. In the end I think you just have to decide what you want.

Ooops... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

[confession] I've had a few pass thru my hands as well [/confession]

I've probably driven a total of 50k in 7 or 8 different m's, abusing them in all kinds of different roles.

One of the shops I used to work for would buy them blown up or otherwise damaged and put them back together to use as shop beaters untill they sold. When my z was down, I drove one for a whole summer. In addition, one of our best customers was a pilot and a hard core bmw guy. I put a lot of miles on his cars positioning them at various airports around the western U.S. He was an afficianado, so his cars always drove well, and I always looked forward to getting paid to drop one of his cars off.

Clean m3's are a rare bird, a true drivers car, have no doubt...

They kind of lean into the wind at speed, and encourage shenanigans on twisty sections.

...and they pull like a freshly fucked fox in a forest fire from ninety to well over one thirty, so if you're irresponsible ( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif ) they make a willing accomplice to felonious hi-jinks...

... but that performance comes with a pricetag many owners won't pay ...

Therefore, most of them drive like an 82 Volare with 200k showing on the clock, and aren't worth the time, effort, and money to get them sorted back out.

As a tech, I serviced a lot of different makes, and after awhile some patterns start to develop, and this is a pattern I saw over and over with many makes, including (and especially) the bmw/m series crowd.

They have enough credit to finance the car and fancy bits of kit, but they never stay up on the maintainance, so their cars are driven into the ground and end up being complete piles of sh*t.

Everybody has expensive wheels, $3k exhausts, and many high dollar bits, but the vast majority of the rest of the car, including the bushings/suspensions/brakes are usually as worn out as a two dollar whore working the northern oilfields. The oil and cooling system leaks, thin pads running on warped rotors, but mostly, bald and/or cupped tires due to alignment issues were the rule, not the exception with these cars.

Finding a clean m series is a challenge, that's for sure.

Ask VRausch, he just got one, and he'll probablly tell you the same thing.

On the topic of why to get a vr-4, the answer is simple.

It's a car that can fufill many roles.

It's a blank canvas, and can be built as a street car, a street/strip car, or for rally...

You decide what you want, and you build it yourself.

More than just "usable" in the winter, they can be down right invincible in inclement weather.

... weather that would stop all the other cars on that list ...

In the summer, they'll purr down the road at any speed that's reasonable and prudent /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif

Even stock, you won't get beat up many onramps.

Tastefully modified, not much will hang with them.

That's why a vr-4 makes sense to many of us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I love my 95 m3 its got 130,000 miles on it and It has all the paper work window sticker, every manual and book even the tape that came with the car. To top all that off every owner has commented on the car fax report every time it has sold and it had never been wrecked. Then I spun it and hit a telephone pole lucky the damage is not bad.

ilya you cant say crap about my bmw you drive a honda. I give you 5 years till it you sell it and it turns up looking like this:
and you know you would drive my m I do remember you begging me to let you drive it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Couldn't of said it better myself. Just buy one and find out, Mr. 23 cars at 20 yrs. Old. What's # 24. If you don't like it, sell it. But I almost guarantee it'll be your new daily. Definitely more potential then anything on that list.

^^^ thats right on the money.that's how it is here in SoFla. I personally love my vr4. it's different. build quality is very good when you compare it to it's lesser brethen. The sleeper factor in a vr4 is fenomenal. especially in overtaking conditons on highways and such. The 4g63
will take abuse all day long as long as you give it proper tlc before hand. I have gotten used to driving different cars then the norm. While I would love to own a z3 M coupe, I simply cant afford the maintanance even if I do my own work and have shop price on parts. why get a vr4? it's roomy, economical if slightly modded, versatile, can go off road if it has to, get the groceries, haul the kids and the ball and chain, has all the creature comforts you need minus GPS,Has a ralli pedegree, and the look on peolples faces in their ( fill in $30k car here) after they get whooped by a 18 year old sedan is priceless.

One of the fondest memories I have of vr-4 ownership was when Mary Ann (one of our best customers ) was riding with me in mine as I gave her a ride to work one gorgeous spring day while we worked on her Cayenne.

She's one of those women that just stops men in their tracks, a true thoroughbred, I've known her for twenty years.

She was giving me sh*t for not driving my z anymore, (she loved that car), and was asking about the Galant.

She'd been in my tsi, ( called it a kiddie car /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif ) , and had seen the Galant apart at the shop a few times, but had never ridden it.

She was commenting on how civilized the interior was while we were sitting at a light, waiting to get on the freeway, and some choad and his lady rolled up in the outside lane, driving one of the baller v-12 benzes...

He looked over at us, and kind of sneered a lil...

She made eye contact and asked him... "wow, nice car, is that a phallous 2000?"

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

The choads lady spit her cappachino out laughing, and he just had a stunned look on his face.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

The crosslight went red, (and it's about a half sec for us to get the arrow)

Mary Ann said "get em"

He heard it, and his demeaner changed, he gripped his wheel and tensed up...

The turn arrow went green, and we launched medium hard and pulled out smartly...

Left him sitting, but he really punched it and was up to the rear quarter as I grabbed second and layed into it hard...

... just apexing the inside of the 90* ... going about 50 ...

The benz is fading, tires howling while he dials in more and more understeer...

... little sand on the road making my car step out just a little, all four wheels scrabbling for traction...

I look over to see where the benz is at, and how how Mary Ann is doing...

... Her mouth is partly open, a wry smile on her face ...

... she's loving it ...

... "more Johnny, get em!!!" ...

Pulled him all the way thru third, and the Galant wiggled a lil when I grabbed fourth on a flat shift

... he's starting to reel us back in...

... and now it's starting to get serious ...

The lanes narrow down, were going over a buck twenty, and this guy is almost back up to the rear quarter...

There's that split second you have to decide...

Do I lift?

This is really stupid...

I look over at the right mirror to judge the distance...

Catch a glimpse of mary Ann with a look of intense pleasure on her face...

... Weird ...

... Like your wife/girlfriend looks when youre pushing all the right buttons ....

... never one to dissapoint a lady ...

We stayed in it...

He lifted...

... and we rolled off the throttle and entered the freeway at a buck and some ...

Choad firmly in trail, with a stunned look on his face...

I look over at Mary Ann, and she looks ...

... satisfied ...

After a second Mary Ann looks over and says in a really husky voice " damn, Johnny, you got a cigarrette?"

Yea, that was cool. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Stupid, but cool.

Sounds like it's foreplay at 100 plus for toybreaker, not piece of mind.
