Firewall Heat shield

Ok, here is a noob question. What is the deal with the firewall heat shield? Can I remove it with no ill effects or is there some reason it should be there? Am I going to radiate a lot of heat to the passenger compartment? What else is there I am not thinking of? Thanks.

Not really going to produce any "ill" efects. The gs models with the SOHC 2.0 don't all have them, but then again, our cars make more heat then they do. So, yes it will get a little hotter in the engine bay and transfer into the cabin, but not sure if it would be enough to be a big discomfort.

There is also a very thick insulating mat on the inside of the car around that area. Taking out one probably wouldn't have too much effect. Why do you want to take it out?

Yea, I saw that insulation on the inside of the cabin when I put in my new dash in yesterday. Its pretty thick so I doubt I'll feel any heat. I want to take it out to clean up the bay a little bit. I think the firewall would look nicer considering I don't have much stuff bolted to it to cover it anyways.

i removed the insulation from my firewall a few months ago and i have not been able to notice any difference in temperatures or any issues from doing so.

I think that it is more for safety, if there was a fire/fuel leak in the engine bay or something?

Next question, is there something comparable, but more like Dynamat you could put in place of the one in the engine bay? I'm gonna paint my firewall, and don't care if it's covered, but not by that nasty, faded mat. I suppose you could probably paint it with fabric paint or something, but considering it's a fire barrier, I'd imagine adding flammables onto it would be counter-productive.

engine bays worth about 50k, bling-bling.
