i need to find a cable to connect my wideband to my laptop. I have the innovative system from ecm tuning. its a nine prong vga chord. I heard that there are some cables that don't work. which brand name cable would be best recommended

It's not going to be vga. A Video Graphics Array (VGA) connector is a three-row 15-pin DE-15 connector.
Your going to need a USB to Serial (DB9) Cable. The ones that work best have the FTDI Chipset.

Assuming you have ECMLink of some variety at this point, are you wiring the wideband into the ECU so you can just log it with link? If you have V3, now that they allow you to wire it into front o2 and emulate narrowband, you can keep EGRTemp for logging some other sensor as well which is pretty nice.
