Transmission Question

Hey guys,

The trans just went in my 91 GVR4, and i was wondering if a 90 trans would work with the 90 shifter cables? As well the shifter base in this car has a lot of play i was thinking about swapping that out, will a 1g work for that as well?

I think the biggest issue you will have is making sure you have the right transfer case between transmissions. My GVR4 has a 23 spline, and I picked up a trans out of a 92 laser RS awd and it has a 22 spline (good thing I got the transfer case with it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

As far as I have read the e/t/l shifter will swap in but may force some changes in boot/console since it is lower and shorter shifting. all will be sloppy though with out new bushgins/washers etc.

For the tranny goes I'm unsure but I would believe so as long as they're the same set up. As far as the shifter goes, I have a 1g shifter in my car and it works just fine, shorter throws too. It just doesn't like the cold sometimes. Also, I'm pretty sure Justin(galant1517) has a 1g shifter as well, maybe he'll chime in. Good luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

the 1G shifter is a direct swap, I'm not sure on the 1G shifter cables.

Is the 3-bolt rear end a ratio match with the 1990 transmission? I'm curious about this too since my 1st/2nd synchros hate life and will go someday.

Couldn't find a thread on what will/will not be a direct swap. I thought you have to swap over the GVR4 shift linkages to a 1G transmission though.

I have a lead on a really cheap 90 trans and shift cables locally... Just trying to figure out if i can make it all work. The guy had the trans in a 91 with 90 shift cables id imagine it would be the same for a GVR4. Not sure why the linkage would change since i am going to swap the cables, shifter base out with a 1g.

90 shifter bracket on the trans and shifter cables are different from a 91-94. You need year specific cables of 91-94 and a 91-94 bracket on the trans.

to clearify...GVR4 shifter arms; GVR4 shift cables; mounted onto the '90trans. Correct?
What are the differences in Transfercases? Which transfercase do I use?

I have a 90 trans in my car, all I needed was the 22-spline t-case and the shifter brackets that are bolted to the transmission from the 92 trans. Works great. I also have a 90 3-bolt lsd rear on my car. Works great
