What about a spare?

Mainly starting a discussion here. What do you do for a spare when you do a 5-lug conversion?

With 855 I initially had 5 wheels of the type I was putting on and had a full size spare as well. Now I have upgraded to different wheels and I acquired a donut spare from a 3g Eclipse so I have a 5-lug spare. I forget what exact size I got so I will check it later. It may not be the perfect diameter since I have larger overall tire diameter than stock with the 225/45/17 tires. That is also part of why I acquired an Eclipse spare, because the new overall diameter is close to the Eclipse stock size. (I am also running an Eclipse speedo gear to correct that issue).

For my new green car, I may run a full size spare again, but it really does impinge on trunk space.

So what have you done? Or do you just buy an AAA membership? I don't. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Im still 4 lug, but i do carry a full size spare and also have AAA. Im really not worried about saving trunk space. I carry tools and even a fire extinguisher.

I don't even carry a jack for local cruising.

I pay $1 a month for extra insurance and that gives me $75 per tow.

The time the t-case locked up, the flat bed to my house was $79.99.

My car is gutted, I carry nothing. No AAA either, its ok because VR4/DSMs are reliable, im not worried about it breaking /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

No matter what lug patter I had, I would try to run a full size spare. The biggest wheels I've ever put on a car were 15's so finding a steely to wrap a tire around was never a problem. I've never had much trust in the donuts that are in everyone's trunk.

Now as far as bigger wheels go, I dont even know if there are steelies in 17 or 18 in. But I personally would try find something (even a random wheel) to throw in the trunk.

Even though I have AAA, I try to only use it if I really have to. The other day my clutch slave cylinder somehow popped off the throw-out arm (I really dont know how that happened) and I coasted into a parking lot, called my bro to bring me brake fluid, crawled under the car and fixed it. I was only 2 miles from home and by the time AAA would have got there, I was done. Thats just me though.

The donut spare isnt that bad. I installed the evo III wheels two weeks ago, one rim needed fixing, so I had the spare on the car for like 3 or 4 days.
It wasnt that bad, the only thing is that you're not supposed to go faster than like 50mph..

I have a stock donut from a subaru. Of course my 5 lug is 100 bolt circle.

I went to tire rack and checked out cars that I knew had the correct bolt circle and then checked for cars with the same size stock tires or the correct size +1,+2 etc tires and got one from the junkyard.

I just picked up a donut for my car. I'm still 4 lug, but the $15 is cheap insurance. I bought it from a guy who went 5 lug on his 240.

I don't have upgraded brakes though, so spares are cheaper. No clearance issues. I didn't run a spare in my GTI, but I don't want to push my luck any more.

Since my trunk is gutted and doesn't really hold anything in general due to the cage I plan on running a full size spare. I picked up a cheapo 17inch rim from someone that was scuffed up. I'm going to throw a 225/45 tire on there to pair up with my other tires. The only problem is I just need to get a non-directional 17inch tire now.. haha

I have 8 2g GSX rims that I plan on using and 1 3g rim as a spare for the whole setup.

Special thanks to Iceman for hooking me up with a set of those rims, he wasn't lying they were in MINT condition. I felt bad stripping them for painting.

[Note: I have the 5-lug swap as well.]

I'll take that donut spare Terry. PM me what it'll take to ship, etc.

Let me know if you don't still have my address from when you repaired / socketed my ECU. By the way... All that repair work you did is working fantastic.

I have a 1G DSM donut spare. As long as the diameter is very close to the tire you're running on the car you can limp it to service station. If you have the correct diameter tires for the spare you are carrying then there's no reason you can go a couple of hundred miles on it. I'd bet an Evo 8-9 one would work really well on a 5 lug swapped GVR4 with tires that are sized similarly to an Ebo. I don't get the aversion to a mini-spare in general though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Another one with potential is a 3KGT VR4 spare. It's got to clear those big ass brakes too.

Hmmm I hadn't thought of that.... maybe the WOF inspector wont notice the difference in bolt holes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Too bad you guys don't have skylines falling over left, right and center over there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'd've had far more use out of spare gearboxes/turbo's/transfer cases/etc...

Having said that, in the rwd vr I carry a pair of spare full size spares /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif (a couple of spare axles would be wise also).

The first time I put tires on the car they had a different circumference than stock, so I couldn't have used the spare anyway. I ditched it (and the stupid trunk floor hump) and haven't looked back. I care a tire repair kit and 12v compressor, but have never had to use it (on my own car, anyway). I've repaired other people's tires though, and one that I know of is still going strong nearly two years later. A lot of european cars come with similar repair kits instead of spares; saves space and weight. Another plus to having the compressor is being able to dial in tire pressures whenever I need to.

I started up a discussion years ago but wouldn't it be cool to mount 4 spares and go to a burn out contest or just do a you tube video. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif

Pump them up about 40psi past safe and soak them in bleach and antifreeze for a few days they smoke and spin until they pop.
