powered palm logger cable

i know i saw this one somewhere but i cant find it again. anybody know how to modify a logger cable so it provides power to the palm while in the car. i hate the thing turning off on me.

I used an old docking cradle for connecting the palm to the computer. I then used the instructions here to add the serial capabilities to be able to hook it to the car. When doing this, don't disconnect the USB wires. Once I made sure that it would communicate with the car, I added power. To do this, I just found a palm car charge pack at staples I think that had a charge cable and a cigarette lighter plug with a usb port on it. I discarded the cable and plugged the USB portion of my charging cradle into that. It charges when the car is on and turns off 1 automatically 1 minute after the car is turned off. I don't think you have to go through all of that hoopla if you don't want to though. I think you can use a palm cabel that has USB and serial dongles on it and plug the serial cable end to the datalogger and the USB end into a cigarette lighter USB deal.

I made one for my Palm IIIc and it's been working flawlessly for years. You should search for the information on the web on what kind voltage and current that your Palm model needs and fed that to what pin in the connector (or hotsync cradle if you prefer), fabricate one accordingly with a proper voltage regulator circuit

i havent had a chance to check this but. applying power to the palm shouldnt affect the ecu in the car? correct? im assuming that the pin associated with charging the palm is in no way hooked to the cars wiring?

Yes, as long as you have it setup properly

1. Modify your existing logger cable or made a new one with charger function according to the pin assignment of this link
2. Buy or build a DC power supply circuit that can convert 12V to 5V, and hook that up to +5V charge and ground PIN as per the information on the above link

Good luck, and enjoy
