Hey all you guys that have painted transmissions, what paint do you recommend? Engine paint? Rustoleum? Wheel paint?

Also, what color do you use, just basic silver or aluminum colored paint. Hoping to do this this weekend before putting it back in the car.

Thanks.

Nowadays, I use VHT FlameProof (not engine enamel) for almost everything under the hood that will see heat. I've tried other stuff, and nothing looks or holds up as well. The VHT FlameProof also covers awesome without primer or any of that sh*t. For prep, just make sure the trans is super clean. Any grease or oil will make for a crappy finish, but that goes for any paint. Simple Green, a brush and tons of scrubbing should do the job. For tough areas, use Simple Green and scrub with a dremel + small wire wheel. The VHT finish is more of a matte, which looks nicer (and more stock), IMO.

I've done my last few transmissions this way, as well as the one I recently did in my brother's car:

1837/2000 newly painted Shep trans and old trans after ~4k miles. Both VHT'd, and the old one still looks pretty good. Most of the fucked up spots on the old trans came from removal.

Thanks Brett.

Couple more questions: One can enough for one trans? Silver color or available in aluminum color?

One can could probably do the job. Like I said, it covers pretty well. 2 cans would be safe, with some left over for other bits. The sh*t never goes to waste in my garage, that's for sure.

I think I usually get the aluminum color, but it could be gray I suppose. The can doesn't actually say, only the cap indicates color. I'd go with the aluminum if they have it. Your local parts joint should stock it. It's not terribly cheap for spray paint, but it works awesome.

Over the weekend I found a partial can of the VHT Flat Aluminum paint, and I bought a can of Rustoleum high heat paint at the home center so I can compare. Unfortunately, did not get to the job this weekend, so no results yet.

This is what I used a few months back. Think it was around $5 at Walmart.

Straight from the junkyard

After some elbow grease

One can was plenty

New yellow zinc case bolts really pop against the silver and brings it back to looking new again.

New reverse sensor from Rockauto and all the other bits hit lightly with gold.

That looks amazing. Prob the best painted and looking used transmission I've ever seen. Good work. I will do the same if I ever remove mine.

Thanks for that Chris. I actually bought some of that paint too, and found some of the VHT in the garage, so I will try both of them. Your results are great. I don't think I will be doing the bolts right now though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks guys! The bolts were around $45 I think. Probably barely notice them once its back in the car but I'll know they're there. Reminds me of my youth detailing models. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well a few weeks ago I spent the time scrubbing, cleaning and painting my trans. Then continued on a did a couple more.

Used some of the VHT and the Rustoleum too. Will see how they hold up.
