'91 Galant VR4

I recently learned of the secret society of VR4 owners, so I decided to google it and now I'm the latest member. I have a 1991 Galant VR4 (398/2000), so add it to your database of surviving VR4s. 210,000 miles and still runs like a top. I only put about 5,000 miles per year on it during the winter months in Colorado; otherwise, garaged. It's up on jacks right now, as I am replacing a lower ball joint. Having issues torqueing the ball joint stud nut to 46 ft. lbs., as the new ball joint turns inside its assembly. Also trying to figure out how to fit the new dust cover over the ball joint. If I were to clamp on to the stud with vicegrips, I would most likely ruin the dust cover. Any suggestions?

Use a large socket or piece of pvc piping to knock the boot down onto the ball joint base

then

put a jack under the control arm.

raise jack untill it contacts the arm, then go a lil more

friction will now keep the ball joint from rotating

Worked like a charm. Thanks for the tip. I also replaced the struts up front while I was at it. Had alignment done. I saw in the tech review section that the 4WS needs to be disconnected to do it right. I asked them about the 4WS, but I know they did not disconnect the 4WS to do the rear alignment. Seems to drive okay, but still wondering if they should have tried harder. Recently replaced a leaking coolant hose to the turbo and though that went well, I managed to break a couple of wires that go to sensors in and around the thermostat housing. The wiring harness in that location is brittle and the wires break easily. So I don't think it's fixable. The wires are wrapped in black electrical tape that is hard as a rock. Question is if I can drive it without the wires being hooked up, or if it will cause a problem ... Any ideas where I can find a diagram of the sensors, so I can figure out which ones are now disabled?

Those are most likely for your coolant temp sensor and fan swtich(IIRC....My harness/sensors are different due to having AEM), but there are a few PDFs of the maintenance manuals here on the site that you can open/DL and thumb through. You can even DL/view them on most smart phones!

Hope that helps, have a good one! Nice to see yet another CO member, welcome!

Thermostat housing sensor wires are always old and brittle. You need to splice in new wires to really correct the condition. One of the first areas I always repair on these cars.
