I have this file cabinet and keep most my tools in there looking to make a lock for it from anything that could be bought from Lowes/Ace/ Home Depot any ideas.

Is that hole at the upper right where a lock was? You can buy those types of locks and the most secure type are the ones that use a round key, of sorts.

If it's not, then not sure if it's the type that won't open the lower drawers unless the top is open slightly...Probably not, although if it was, would mean you only need a lock on the top one. Otherwise, probably need to lock each drawer individually...

BUT - they have those locks that use a rod where you push it down. lock on the top only and none would open.

If you do individual, then a pivoting hinge with rivets (or security hardware) and use a padlock.

EDIT: this is the bar I was talking about

You could get the correct setup like JNR said, or you can bolt on a shed door lock from Lowes/H.D. etc. They wrap around the side and have a spot for a padlock.

^^^Yeah, something like that was what I had in mind also, as far as clasps are concerned, although would need one/each drawer of course.

Another thought is you could run a drawer lock (the round key type as mentioned) where you drill a hole thru the panel, push this thru and it has a locknut on the back side to go against the backside of the panel (drawer)..it has a lever that rotates 90 deg so that it goes up against the top (or side) part of the drawer (fixed part), so that you can't open it.

You could do a lock bar it is just a flat piece of steel wit a tab on the bottom of the cabinet front and one on top front and goes in front of the drawers with a lock top and bottom so it can't be opened

150lbs in weights. The weight of the cabnet its self and the weight of all the tools? I wouldn't be lifting it.

bottom heavy then, so make it even easier to push and tilt onto and a waiting cart /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

lol, well being silly, but seriously why waste a drawer with that, when a few bolts will do much more and still give you room. Thing is, if somebody really wants whatever's in there then they'll just bring the proper tools.

James is right. I was implying in so many words the dumbbell coupled w/ weight of tools plus weight of steel drawer is more effort than most thieves would waste --behave or I'll sick Wop on your ass. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif

This^^ Just run the flat bar through all the handles and into a tab at the bottom of the cabinet. At the top cut a slot or drill a hole in the flat bar and weld something on the cabinet that comes through that hole and you can lock a padlock to.

The Hong Kong Government has been using this home depot security on its filing cabinets for years /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

If you aren't in a rush I could get you a picture of one!

LOL, OK....guess another fly buzzing around won't hurt nothing and I won't even swat it.

Not sure too many thieves would bother with a file cabinet, unless they know what's in it...If you're worried about it though, like I said some anchor bolts and that thing won't be going anywhere.
