If you think your trans sucks, check the shifter cables.

I am glad I did. I thought I had a progressively worse 3rd gear synchro for the last month and yesterday I was backing it out of the garage and then, shift knob goes loose and doesnt go into anything. Hmmm pull the boot and the right side cable had just unscrewed itself completely. It was slow to the point that 3rd gear just got harder and harder to reach. I thought if it was a cable issue that 1-3-5 would be a problem not just 3rd and thats why I didnt check. Well that fixed it and its shifts crisply and perfect into all gears and returns to neutral with a spring. Everything just needed to be tightened and that saved my from rebuilding the tran or selling it way cheaper. Anyway it's not a bad idea to check everyonce in a while.

How do you adjust the shifter cables? I am not completely sure of what's involved with it.

The eyelets on the shifter end of the cables are threaded .Just unhook the cable from the shifter and turn them to make the effective cable length longer or shorter.

Unhook shifter cables in the car. Then go out and put it in first gear manually. If you don't know what first is under the hood pop the hood and do every gear before unhooking the cables in the car. Now Put it in first adjust the cables and slide them on. Now take them off and go to second repeat, then third etc. After all the different gears and turning the cables a half turn back and forth should be good to go. Slide them on tighten the jam nuts and go driving. If you want to really over build remove the assembly including the base and weld 4 large washer in the base after you remove the sponges other things can also be fabricated like positive stops with brackets and nuts and bolts so you don't over shift and bushings or roller skate bearings in the cable ends under the hood.
