Is there a correct method for removing the diff internals (gears, etc) from a diff housing?
I was practicing on an unwanted open diff using a long bolt and a hammer to pound the jebus out of the bearing/diff assembly through both axle openings. This had a down side of putting some small gouges into the assembly. Any fancy way to do it?

They make a special tool that pulls diffs out. Kind of like a steering wheel puller. Not sure where to get a picture of one to show you how to make one, but you might want to stop in at a shop that does rear diffs and maybe get some info.

There has to be some pressure on the shims to put the correct preload on the diff bearings but they usually pop right out. Larger diffs like the 7.5 in a camaro and chevys and the 8.8 in the fords have less due to larger bearings than a mitsubishi but two long pry bars usually pop it right out using the case as a lever point. Don't touch a gear but only the center of the diff. Also when putting it back in down set one shim in the the diff and think your going to tap the other shim in. It will either crack or warp the shim. Set the diff the races and the shims up against the housing and start pushing inward. A second person helps alot. Also trying to set one up in a car sucks. having it out on a bench is the only way to do it. you can also make a table that the diff falls in that helps alot as well. That way gravity takes over some of the work.
