I pulled the pistons out of my engine that broke a valve, and was wondering how I can find out if the rods/pistons are still good? I'm assuming the 4 rods, and 3 pistons are still ok, but is the only real way to know by sending them to a machine shop?

My 2 cents, since nobody else has said anything:

As far as I know, unless the damage is clearly evident, you'll have to take some measurements. Many people aren't comfortable with this process/don't have the tools, so they let a machine shop take care of it.

Here is the info you will need:

Personally, I have no idea how to measure bend and twist for a connecting rod; I think it requires some sort of alignment device.

Maybe Dialcaliper will speak up. He usually has something valuable to say in matters like these.

If there is any visible damage to the pistons, then scrap them - if they were cracked, they most likely would have failed spectacularly by now (cracked, melted, severe skirt wear or valve impact). If not, and the rods are straight (cast rods will bend before cracking), it's pretty cheap to have a machine shop magnaflux the rods. ($25-40). If you have the tools (micrometer and T-gauge), it's not too hard to check the big-end bores.

I don't have the tools, but have access to them. At least two of the pistons are damaged, one could probably be fixed, but not worth it to me. I'll probably keep the rods and the two pistons for spares or paper weights. Hopefully I can use or find someone to use the rods. Thanks for the help.
