why does it smoke?

I am on engine #2 now (fully built engines, that is) and this one smokes too, though less than the first... the only things the same between the two are the head and turbo as far as stuff that could leak go...it doesn't seem to smoke on startup (leading me to believe it is not valve stem seals)but it does start to smoke after it has run for a while, especially if it is sitting at an idle for a few minutes...

so... whay does my car smoke?

It's your valve stem seals. That is a classic symptom of bad valve seals. Sorry you did all that extra work for nothing but at least you can do the seals without removing the head.

What color is the smoke?

White = steam = head gasket crack in the water jacket etc.
Black = fuel = to much and car isn't burning it. Could be a bad o2 and the afc or what ever can't commensate.
Blue = oil = valve stem seals, turbo seals, rings. If it doesn't worst after hard accel then its probably the carbons in the turbo. If the turbo is worn and hasn't rubbed the housings yet you can simply remove the housings and mark the wheels with a black sharpie then un bolt the compressor wheel nut and rebuild, lining everything up and re torqueing with a t handle.

That's all you need to know right there.

It would be smart to check the turbo before you open the engine (anyway you have to take it off), it might need to be rebuilt and re -balanced) check for oil on the exhaust right after the turbo and air pipes between turbo and intercooler. When burning oil from the turbo, it has a strong smell as the oil doesn't burn by combustion but by hot temperature. If not problem found here, continue with the head.
