Hi There,

I have been suffering from the hard / soft / brake pedal issue and my lines have been checked and bled several times, so I am going to try looking at the brake master cylinder.

Now I have seen kits for 4x4 GTi 16v, Turbo 2.0L etc

I wondered if any had the bore size spec of the single pistoned 87 - 89 brake setup? Does anyone have the Mitsu part number for a new and the brake master cylinder kit. I mitsu specialist in the UK state they need to get from Japan and this is about 100GBP or approx 160USD?

Has anyone repaired their BMC setup recently?

Thanks for any info

Regards

Also will a post 1990/Facelift VR4 BMC setup bolt straight up to my single pistoned / prefacelift setup without any modification?

Thanks again

FL master will certainly bolt up but the booster is a larger size so you may need to bend the brake lines out a little more. Bore size will definitely be larger though.

If it were me, I would pull apart the BMC and at least just inspect the bore and seals. I had a 5G Galant BMC start leaking because it was sitting idle for so long and at the time I was a broke ass student so just pulled it apart, inspected (didn't see any scoring, pitting or corrosion so just figured something got trapped under a seal), cleaned everything up then re-assembled and everything was fine.

I would say the early UK cars up to mid-late-ish '89 with the 265mm front rotors would have the same BMC as the PFL VR-4.

Mine too has a soft pedal but only after the ABS has been activated so I think I have something going on with my ABS pump.

And lastly, where in London are you?

Hi There,

I will pull the assembly apart and have a look but thinking I will go for a rebuild kit of some sort.

I have seen some with just the rubber seal/o rings, but the kit from Mitsu Japan includes the piston assemblies (shown as parts 8,9,10):

HERE

The pedal will be hard sometimes and then on the 2nd or 3rd press the pedal will soften and go 2/3rds of the way to the floor when constant pressure applied.

I work in Harrow (not technically London :) ) but now live just north of Watford

Are you a londoner or ex-londoner? (I think I may have spoken to you on retro-rides?

Thanks

Hi there,

doesn't appear to leak no...haven't had to top up.

Its been bled and changed twice with related maintenance work and still the same so I need to try and progress this before I get caught out one day braking hard and unexpectedly..

If you've lost brake fluid but couldn't find a leak check the firewall inside the car behind the brake pedal. most likely there will be all your lost brake fluid...
Mostly piston seal ring starts to leak and air can get into the master cylinder. on expansion stroke (when depressing the pedal) the air gets pumped before the master cylinder and you get that soft pedal feel. Due to the air+moisture entering the cylinder the walls often start to corrode. So do yourself a vafour and go for a new master cylinder - they are available in aftermarket and only sligltly above the price for the OEM repair kit.

Thanks for your replies...

I have seen a few after market BMCs but unsure which to go for as I am finding it difficult to get the OEM part number in order to cross reference.

I've not been able to confirm / check whether my cylinder bore is 23.8mm (I have also seen 22.2mm cylinder bore listed against the GTi 16 4x4 and 2.0 turbo 150hp specicifed). Or could I risk a 1 inch bore from facelift post 90 E39a or evo 1,2,3,4,5,6 or prefacelift 8g legnum ..

The Mitsu OEM complete replacement is 370+ VAT :)

maybe might have been speaking to another E39A owner on RR? My VR-4 is in New Zealand (where I'm from) and I haven't seen it let alone touch it for nearly two years now :p

E39 should all have the 1"/2,54cm brake cylinder. Non-ABS and FWD with single-cylinder front calipers had a 15/16" / 2,38cm brake cylinder.

You can also find the diameter on the lower side of the cylinder. (Maybe use a mirror when it's installed in the car)

The aftermarket cylinders here are ~150 EUR (Mitsubishi OEM repair kit with piston ~120 EUR)

I am going to find out about this unit..old new genuine stock

click

It probably is a 1 inch bore cylinder and so it may fit with a few tweaks.. and worth a try for the money
but I will see what else he has to sell
