4 bolt ?

I've got a 4bolt rear..and latley I've been noticing that between gears and if I'm not smooth on the clutch, the rear seems to have some slack in it or something and it'll make a slight sound and almost like a "thud" sound..it dosen't sound harsh, but I don't think it's should be doing this ? any idea's ? I read somewhere about shimming the rear..but not sure.. I also get it sometimes when I abruplty let off the gas. I'd just liek an idea od what could be causing this, most likely it could be anumber of different thing..

My stock rear end is starting to do this /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The rear probably needs to be rebuilt. I havn't inspected the driveshaft joints yet tho.

Yeah, either your rear end is due for a rebuild or your drifeshaft u-joints are loose. Inspect your driveshaft if you can.

Could also be a loose/broken/missing bolt that holds the diff in place.

I replaced all of the spider joints and carrier bearings on my drive shaft and still have "looseness and noise" in the rear. I am pulling the rear next week and rebuilding it. New shims, seals and bearings. I am hoping that will fix it. As you have noted, it is the most noticeable when getting on and off the throttle.

i also have this problem when i had a 3 bolt rear and then i did the 4 bolt swap. the problem didn't go away, all my driveshaft u-joints are tight. i believe my transfer case has slop in it. not saying this is your problem, but just something else to consider. it would be easy to check and could save you some headache:)
