I've only sen two sets in person so maybe they were an older style? They were definitely all plastic and didn't' weigh much because I considered getting a set to shave 10 lbs off the nose of the car but I didn't want to deal with RHD beam pattern.

Re: 909/1000 Build thread

this is true as i had the same issue with my civic half rad, but i thought i was having issue because im at 7000 feet, i daily drove the car and i changed elevation constantly. i would only overheat when i was under constant load driving over a pass. once i got to the top of the pass it would drop right away and if i hammered on the throttle while on level ground it wouldn't overheat. so if this is a race car i don't think youll have thank much of an issue, if your going to daily it then you may be right about overheating issues.

Correct. The problem I would run into is all the vac lines that are built into the plenum on a normal intake...I may look into building a vac tank to come off of it somewhere to take care of that.

Re: 909/1000 Build thread

individual throttle bodies work well in N/A applications where you are trying to squeeze every last bit of HP out, but on turbo applications a normal single throttle body is fine surely. The throttle plate and shaft aren't that much of a restriction if you move up to a larger sized throttle body. I can't help but think there was a reason Mitsubishi opted to use a smaller diameter throttle body on the turbo engines than the N/A engines.

There is a lot more work involved with the barrel throttle body design and more money that would need to be invested with it, so I may scrap that idea and stick with a traditional intake. I may design a throttle body with the barrel to mount in the stock location later on just because I like the no restriction at WOT. I am waiting for tax return time to order material for this. I also have designs for a bunch of other things and I know the Galant page on facebook was begging me to make (Sending units) I will post more up when I have time to maybe do some production runs of stuff and sell them.

ITB's will help with throttle response so there would be other benefits over max hp. But I can't see any ill effects other that tuning that would be a concern.

The only thing that I would be worried about is part throttle, But as you said it's probably something that tuning can take care of.

Re: 909/1000 Build thread

SD seems to work well with part throttle as long as you have a good vac source running behind each throttle body to a distribution block. A vacuum canister should help limit the effect on the map sensor when hitting the brakes if you decided to stick with a brake booster. But ITB's do require you to lock the WB o2 for initial tuning.
You will most likely have to spend time adjusting the throttle tip in (comparable to an Accelerator pump on a carburetor). The results of ITB's are rewarding on a properly working setup but it just adds more complication to tuning.

Re: 909/1000 Build thread

I am planning on driving it. Not daily but I would like it to still drive some what decent. Here is a question would I have to run vac lines off of just one runner or would I have to run a line off of every runner?

EHmotorsports
(Capt Fabbin Stabbin)
01/07/15 10:59 AM
Re: 909/1000 Build thread

you would have to run one line off of each runner to get the best vacuum. then run any of your sensors, brake booster and related off of the distribution block. or you can have an additional runner/balance tube that connects to the underside of the runners to make it look cleaner. then run a nipple off the side of the rail for the booster and all other fittings can be attached to the middle portion under the intake for a clean look.
But that is up to you as I can see you are having fun with software that I would love to have access to haha.

Re: 909/1000 Build thread

I like the idea of individual throttle bodies, this paired with equal length runners would be amazing. This would no doubt leave each cylinder with equal airflow without the need of a cad blueprint or virtual flow testing. I know runner size would have to be kept to a minimum but placing the tb (sans itb) at center of the runners underneath or over the top could solve that easily. Just a thought.

edit: then again this would never work without a chamber to speed up the in coming air and like said keep the motor happy at idle and part throttle.

I'm using solidworks with hypermill for programming. The programming isnt the issue it is the numbers drawn and centered. Its not a real big issue, probably an extra 15 min to do that but if you have to do it 10 20 times it adds up.

We use vibrant on a lot of the exhausts that we build at the shop and they sound really nice. I also didn't want the big fart can hanging off the back of my car. I know a lot of people run them on the GVR4s and to each their own but I don't like the way they look on these cars. The 2gs they look alright but not on the older cars.

I'm running the same Vibrant muffler with an 18" resonator and full 3" piping and no cat. It sounds nice, but is a bit louder than I was hoping for or expecting.
I may add another resonator eventually.
Also, You have to get creative with the rearmost hanger to get the muffler to look right and not hit the body due to the shape and short tips compared to the stock setup.

This is just for the runners. Its way more than I need. Discount steel up here has a drop section that you can dig through to get material so its a little more discounted than off the shelf. It was $250 for that but I am going to saw probably 2 inches off the length and chop it in half the long way.

I know most people won't understand but there is a lot of satisfaction that comes from being able to create some from a raw piece of material into something that I consider to be a work of art and I am saying that for everyone that works in my field. I enjoy what I do and I will do this more as a learning experience and as a challenge. I am not selling these, and if it doesn't perform the best it won't bother me. Its more of a; "I designed that and built it". Not many people can say that.

Re: 909/1000 Build thread

Biggest rotor you can fit behind a 17" rim is a 13" rotor.

- Evo X rotors are 14" requires 18" rim to clear.
- Evo 5-9 Rotors are 12.5" but cannot be use with CTSV calipers
- CTSV calipers bolt to the DSM knuckle but need 13" Cobra rotors to work. (Fit under 17" rims) Also you machine the mounting tabs on the CTSV caliper to correct the offset to be able to fit cobra rotors.

I believe one or both of the pistons is 2mm smaller. like 44/42 vs 42/40 or something like that. FWIW my 13" cobra rotors with 3KGT calipers fit my 17's with room to spare.

EDIT: Actually not that much room to spare. I don't see fitting a 14" rotor in there. Maybe a 13.250-13.375"

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like I will get the cobra rotors. I really don't want to go with a 18" wheel on my galant. It's to big of a wheel IMO on these cars.

Re: 909/1000 Build thread

In all honesty even the 13" rotor is probably overkill. I built a car for another member and used the 2G 3KGT rotors with matching calipers and the thing stopped like woah. To try to maintain balance I used bitey pads on the back and normal ceramics on front and it still locked up the fronts first.

Re: 909/1000 Build thread

Depends on what you're doing with it. On a road course, a ~3200 lb car will want every square inch of that 13" rotor to use as a heat sink.

It might be awhile just because I would like to have the hub installed and wheels on so I can make sure everything is going to clear and I can faro arm the mounting locations.

Biggest rotor you can fit behind a 17" rim is a 13" rotor.
- CTSV calipers bolt to the DSM knuckle but need 13" Cobra rotors to work. (Fit under 17" rims) Also you machine the mounting tabs on the CTSV caliper to correct the offset to be able to fit cobra rotors.

Re: 909/1000 Build thread

There are a few threads out there with people attempting to use these calipers on DSMs. So far I haven't seem anyone pull it off completely or at least update their threads if they did. Yes, the bolt spacing is the same but offset seems to be way off and when offset is corrected, the rotors seem to be an issue.

Hopefully you can get passed this and figure out an easy way to make it work. I've wanted to pay with these myself for a while now but have yet to try. Good luck and post your findings!

I'd be interested to see which type of wheel offset would be need to clear that setup. When bolting them to the hub without modification, the caliper sits roughly 0.5" farther out towards the wheel than an evo brembo caliper.
Has anyone bought this kit?

They definitely do.

Wheel spacers will most likely be needed, which isn't an issue to me depending on how much of a spacer is needed. When you start getting a lot of wheel poke and having to add camber, etc just to fit a set of calipers is when I start looking at other alternatives.

Best of luck and keep this thread updated!

I got some hardware for the calipers and mounted them up. I am going to order wheel bearings and grab an Evo rotor and my Evo enkeis and mock this up to make sure what offsets I need to do and get something made up.

Once I have everything figured out on these I will probably do a How-to on this set up with all the parts needed. This will be great consindering they are much cheaper than the evo brembos and are pretty much the same set up.

Now I just need to figure out the rear brake setup on these cars.

OE Evo 8/9 rotors. I put the wheel bearings and seals in last night. I did some measurements off of a stock Evo 8/9 hub and knuckle and right now it looks like im going to need a .07 spacer between the rotor and hub but i am going to get a set of rotors and confirm this. I also checked clearance between the caliper and Evo 8 enkeis and it looks like it will have no problem clearing.

I should have taken a picture of it last night. They caliper didn't quite bolt on it was like .03 to .04 of interference on the inside of the caliper. I will just chuck it up in the lathe and take some off the outside and it will fit. I am just waiting to get paid tomorrow so I can pick up a pair. Re: 909/1000 Build thread

I was able to cut the rotors last night and get the proper offset for the rotor.I had to cut the OD of the rotor to 13.400 and add a 4mm (.157) between the hub and the rotor. And it fits perfect with good clearance on a EVO 8 Enkei.

TurboDSM What I would do if you go with the Cobra rotors is get some washers that will fit over the studs and stack them up until you get the proper offset. Then let me know what that offset is. I can make some spacers for the Cobra rotors. 4mm might be the magic number but I would just make sure. Like Patches said 13" will work just fine with plenty of pad contact.

It was kind hard to get a picture of the offset but it even on both sides.

I was going to mod the stock ebrake handle/mount to a hydraulic master, so you can still lock the rear brakes like stock. Eliminates the shitty cable setup. I know it's "not legal" but when you get inspected all they care about is when the hand brake is applied the car doesn't move. I just need to find some brembo's for the rear and I'll probably go ahead with it.
